Single Shot Exemption Explanation/Database Thread

You are completely wrong. First off, there is NO restriction on importing firearms which are not considered a so-called a-salt weapon. The only restriction is on transfers and there are exemptions to some transfers, such a PPT and intrafamial transfers.
I would suggest that you go and spend some time reading the CA PC, as well as many posts here before you post things which you know nothing about.Kemasa.

As others have stated, you're completely and totally incorrect.@kemasa
"Currently, if you move in from out of state, you can bring in a Glock Gen4 and it is legal."
No, it is not legal to import an off roster pistol.
Now, it the firearm was modified to SSE, then imported, then it would be permissible to import it until December 31, 2014. After that, not at all.
(or unless some exemption applies, like being part of the royalty class.)Comment

Depends on the manufacture but I returned two sig's for warranty work. I explained to the customer service rep. That the gun was purchased with SSE exception, they wanted me to email the DROS worksheet for the gun, the CS rep explained they had to confirm the DROS worksheet and later in the afternoon I recieved all return info. and I sent it back fed ex. Make sure you have the DROS worksheet from the ffl!Comment

If you moved into CA from a free state, then you would not have a copy of the DROS. Also, if you received it as an CA only intrafamial transfer, you would not have a DROS either.Depends on the manufacture but I returned two sig's for warranty work. It is really not up to the company to judge you on how you legally obtained the firearm. If you ship it to them, then need to return it to you unless they have actual evidence of a crime or some other valid issue, not made up garbage to harass people.Last edited by kemasa; 12-04-2014, 11:13 AM.Kemasa.

I'm a little late to the party and the more I google and read, the more confused I think I'm getting. Let me see if I have this correct though. If the handgun I want to buy is on this "roster" http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/safeguns.asp I can buy it (from my local Turners) AFTER Jan 1, 2015 and NOT have to do anything special other than DROS and payment. For example, the SA XD9(XD9101) or Beretta M9. But if it's not on the list, I need to buy it before Jan 1, 2015 when the SSE exception goes away. Did I understand this correctly?
Thanks for the input!Comment

I hope somebody can help me with this question.
I went to a local gun store in Nor Cal today and the guy who owns it told me that his ATF contact told him that as far as the federal government is concerned converting you single shot gun to semi auto after you take possession is a felony and that ATF was going to peoples houses to check and see if their guns were still single shot or semi auto.
Does this sound right to anyone? It doesn't make sense to me because as long as the gun is not an assault weapon its still federally legal to own a semi auto pistol.CRPA and NRA member.

Yes, you are correct. Regarding an SSE purchase, check with the store that's selling it to you (not all stores do SSE BTW) regarding the last day you need to have it DROS'd. Some stores are stopping on Dec 31, some Dec 21, some earlier than that because they don't want to be stuck with your gun if you have a DROS delay.I'm a little late to the party and the more I google and read, the more confused I think I'm getting. You could kindly ask the LGS what specific federal law has been broken by converting a single-shot handgun to a semi-automatic. "What some guy said" isn't an answer.I hope somebody can help me with this question.

I don't think he meant any harm so I won't say the name of the store. I try to take everything I hear with a grain of salt.
But I did ask for a few specifics and he was adamant that there are actual active cases where ATF has been to buyer's houses because of SSE.
This is the first I heard of this and wondered if anyone else heard anything about ATF doing anything to buyers.CRPA and NRA member.

Ask which BATF office the person is out of. I would bet it is the Sacramento Office and there has been some really bad info coming out of that office. Some of the bad info that the CA DOJ has received has come out of that office and does not match with the rest of the BATF.I went to a local gun store in Nor Cal today and the guy who owns it told me that his ATF contact told him that as far as the federal government is concerned converting you single shot gun to semi auto after you take possession is a felony and that ATF was going to peoples houses to check and see if their guns were still single shot or semi auto.

Ask what the specific Federal Code violation is and I suspect that you won't get an answer. You can make a firearm out of a frame and you can make a firearm out of raw materials, so why would it be illegal to change a firearm?Kemasa.
