I was finally able to fire my CA7 a few times last week. All the ranges in my area are shut down thanks to covid, but I was able to find a range with a little bit of driving.

I switched out my upper to an 11.5 DDM4V7 upper. I also added an SBA4 brace; DD grip, AR mag lock gen 4, kingpin, and larue mbt2 flat bow trigger. Over the last couple of months during the shutdown I just started buying parts little by little and the credit card took a big hit. Coronavirus cost me big time lol.

I was initially going to go with a Mk18 upper, but after much thought and reading I ended up going with the DDM4V7 upper bc I like the lower weight and slimmer mlok setup (which I have on another rifle). I definitely want to get a Mk18 upper in the future....and maybe a urgi upper too.

I was initially wondering how loud it was going to be and what kind of muzzle blast it was going to generate. It turned out to a non event. Last time out I was even next to a wall. And since I was in a dark indoor range, I observed no fireball, lol. I used miscellaneous 556 (mag tech, Aguila, Winchester, frontier, federal) I had laying around. So no complaints with the stock upper DD set up.

Everything else performed well as well. Love the brace, love the trigger (I already had another larue). I also have a holosun 510. I bought the holosun and an Eotech at the same time....the eotech was returned. I have astigmatism, so even the holosun dot flares...but using the flip up rear aperture trick to cowitness makes the flare go away....amazing (more info on this can be found on google).

All in all, I was very impressed with the set up....actually I am stoked. I was expecting this setup to be a little novelty gun and expected a loud, annoying little ar pistol like the others I've seen at the range many times. It was the opposite of this perception. I could only shoot from close in out to 20 yds in the small indoor range, but I was able to get solid shooting from standing unsupported. I can't wait to get outdoors and see how it shoots out to 100 on the bench.

Big thanks for Franklin for undertaking the huge project making the CA7 available to us California folks who are operating behind enemy lines lol!

PS. I was gonna get a ruger pc carbine down the road, but I think I will just get a 9mm upper for this pistol. I think the set up is just dialed in...I know it will cost more than getting a pc carbine outright, but there is something to be said for sticking to the AR format. Hell, I'll probably follow the cal guns motto: "which XXX should I get?" ....Reply: ALL.
Nice!! I’ve got an MK18 upper on mine along with an Eotech EXPS3-0 and Law Tactical brace folder. This thing is heavy! I probably should have gone with the DDM4V7 upper in retrospect.

Edit: I’ve also added a Surefire QD Warden blast diffuser as well for indoor shooting.

Yup I should be starting DROS on mine very soon, pumped to get it and try it. Assuming you had a flash hider? I was curious how lloud and how much blast there'd be, nice to hear not bad. I grabbed a 10.5" PSA upper, but now thinking about going a little more high end and piecing together something nicer. It does hit the credit card hard! My PSA 10.5 upper feels as heavy as my 14.5 upper so I think I can shave some oz and get higher quality, just gotta fork out the $$$.

I went with DDM4 300s upper, DD H-Buffer, spring and pistol grip, Trijicon MRO green, Law Tactical folder, Surefire 600DF Scout, AR Maglock gen4 and kingpin, and a SBA3 Pistol brace. Still waiting on my cloud defense lcs

Sounds likes a nice setup! You shot it yet?
So far I have the PSA upper, SBA 3 brace, Magpul K2, and AR Maglock G4 with Kingpin. I am going to toss my SIG Romeo 5, try to keep it lightweight-ish. Thinking about just getting a barrel, handguard, gas tube, and adjustable gas block and keep the FA upper and BCG.

Don't forget to get a Magpul trigger guard. The aluminum one the CA7 ships with has the gap that eats into your finger.

Some how, I must have fallen off notifications for this thread. We do have more CA7s shipping soon. I am having operations prioritize this SKU so we can get more supply to CA.

I adjusted the ar maglock to have just enough room with the bolt carrier to move up when I press the king pin. My pmags drop out no problem without folding.

Hey everyone. First let me say I'm not looking to get into a debate, argument or otherwise; and furthermore, let me apologize for beating a dead horse. I went to my FFL today to DROS my Franklin Armory CA7, good news right?? Not so much.. My FFL, who is also a prosecutor for the county where I live, told me that converting the CA7 to semi auto, would make it an SBR. I explained that there was no current law that states we cannot convert a bolt action pistol to semi auto, especially seeing as though the CA7 is on the California handgun roster. He told me that being a bolt action pistol is the only way it was able to get on the roster to begin with. He proceeded to DROS the CA7, but he pointed out it shows up in the DROS system as a "bolt action pistol" and not just a "pistol"; and there was no way to change it.

Anyway, I'm on the fence now as to whether or not it's worth risking being the test case here in my county. Just thought I'd share my experience in an effort to you all up to date. This is truly a sad state that we live in...

How about you read this thread, then read it again, make your own conclusions and take actions you deem appropriate. I have met many prosecutors, and most of them are just really good at arguing...

I've read over this thread quite a few times.. this thread was exactly the reason I decided to get the CA7 and slap my own upper on it. The purpose of my post was to simply share my personal experience; not to try and sway anyone's opinion of what they should or shouldn't do. As a California gun owner, I'd be remiss if I didn't share information.
