Institution Road from the 215 is Closed

If heading to the CCW unit to drop off paperwork, be aware that the Institution Road is closed and gated off, likely due to flooding. The entry is now via a very low visibility gated access road to the jail that is posted not a public entrance and located on the other side of the SBSD property. This access is the same access temporarily being used by the race track. There was no ETA on the gate being reopened.

This report is from March 3, 2023.

Time from entry to the CCW unit to leaving was 10 minutes, with most of that time spent signing documents. The ladies in the office have a very efficient operation going on and were quite efficient even with some interior work underway.

We are fortunate to have the CCW unit we have in this county.

Nah, that route (google maps) has never been open to the public from my experience. Authorized gate even when exiting. 215/Palm.

Unless there is an issue with the road (it does flood) you enter the property Institution Rd. Exit Palm/Kendall then use Institution Road. The back way in from the Raceway is open from time to time.

            Renewal

Friday, March 3. I arrived at Prado for qualifying at 10 am. Shot two five-rounds sets on three firearms, and left the site by 10:45 am, and that was after waiting about 15 minutes for the line to open up to shoot.

Friday, March 3. I arrived at the CCW office about 3 pm. Signed the documents, handed the documents and money orders over to staff, and was back at my vehicle by 3:20 pm. It literally took longer to walk from the parking lot to the CCW office than it did for the office to intake my paperwork and signatures.

Saturday, March 11. Renewal card arrived in the mail box.

            The new process is impressive.

Thanks go to Sheriff Dicus and the entire CCW unit.

Anyone ever ask they we are limited to 3 firearms on our permits? Grateful to be able to exercise our rights but would like to have the option to carry any of my other firearms.

At my range day last November, the Deputies said they allow only three weapons on your permit because they would like to see you be proficient with the firearms you carry and save your life with and most people will stick with just one. They really pressed the students to seek extra formal training and even use airsoft guns to practice with. I see their point and tend to agree.

I understand your point. However, my experience is that most people keep their carry guns to a similar if not identical manual of arms (example, striker fired, no external safety, etc). The lone exception would be those that include a snub revolver. I only know one person (that I can think of) that goes against this approach. He is old school... 1911, Browning HP and a 4-inch revolver! LOL.

I would love to be able to keep a large semi-auto in the truck, when needed... to back up my smaller concealed gun.

Then list it on your CCW and do so. You have three slots, use them.

                        AFAIK...
During the late-1990s, CA laws were amended and issuing agencies were required to utilize the standardized CCW application made by CA DOJ. As a result, SBSD adopted the policy to only allow up to three handguns, because the standardized CCW application only has space for three.

Does anyone know if the Victorville CCW Unit is up and running yet? Last I heard they were going to be processing renewals on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Did you check the SBCSD CCW site or email them?

Sheriff Dicus answered this question when he came to visit with the CRPA Chapter earlier this year. In his opinion, based on many years training hundreds of deputies, one cannot maintain reasonably optimal competence on many firearms, so the limit is set at three. Sheriff Dicus made a pretty good case for his position. I'd be very surprised if the number gets changed upwards.

Check CRPA...there may be a recording of Sheriff Dicus' presentation. It was very informative and open. We are fortunate to have him as our Sheriff.

Due to the SBCSD computer system being hacked renewals are NOT being processed currently. It could be weeks or months before they are back up and running.
