Earlier today, on KFBK's "The John McGuiness Show", John had Sheriff Jones on. During the interview, Sheriff Jones started that this would likely be his last term.

If you recall, before winning this current term, Sheriff Jones ran for Congress and lost. He wasn't planning on running for Sheriff again at that point. The people that were running to replace him all seemed to be anti-gun and implied they didn't agree with Sheriff Jones' CCW issuance policies. Fortunately, he ran again and won.

So, with it being apparent that Sheriff Jones will likely not run again, where does that leave us? We've been fortunate to have a sheriff that supports our rights to CCW, but what do you think we can expect should a new sheriff not support our rights? Instant cancellation of our permits? Non-renewals?

Hopefully we'll get someone with the same beliefs and it won't be an issue... Hopefully everyone is up for a fight to support a candidate that will support us, because I'm sure getting rid of Sheriff Jones and ending his policy of "shall issue" in Sacramento is high on liberal politicians agenda.

      9/15 submitted renewal
10/1 received notice on that additional docs were needed (instructor and I both missed that wrong caliber was listed on one of my firearms on one certificate). Got corrected cert same day by e-mail and submitted.
10/2 received notice permit is ready for pick up.

For those that have taken the renewal class, do they make you shoot the first 50 rounds course of fire as practice or do you just go straight to the test?

The requirements are clearly stated.. They also allow some discretion on the part of the instructor. Each instructor can explain to you how they manage the class and meet the requirements.

Regarding reporting contact with law enforcement...

Has anyone here had an incident, or hear of someone who has, not involving your firearm, and reported it to SSD as required, and had your permit revoked?

Specifically, being involved in a mutual first fight, with no charges, no injuries, and only local PD responding and taking an incident report only.

When you go to renew, do they actually check for something where the applicant want arrested?

Asking for a friend. Really. I am!

Any time you're involved and you have contact where your name is taken down, you should consider it to be law enforcement contact.

Mutual fighting is an indicator that would raise questions. It would be another matter entirely if you are in a sanctioned match fight.

Mutual public fighting is supposed to be sanctioned by law.

If cops showed up it means you and your pal were having an unsanctioned public WWF match and someone was alarmed enough to call the police...

Does the sheriff's department consider this type of character "good"...?

                  Probably not.

Should you hide it from them?

                  Definitely not.

                  Have you learned your lesson?

                  Hopefully.

                  Good luck.

In County government, especially for "electeds", it is common for them to groom a replacement (remember there was a guy running last time, who all of the sudden withdrew for "family reasons) and then go to the BOS mid-term and say "I'm retiring - I'd like you to appoint so-and-so my replacement". This provides continuity and allows everyone to work with someone they know. It also allows the replacement to run as an incumbent for the next full-term.

Hopefully, Sheriff Jones has someone he trusts he can turn the office over too. Of course, given his relationship with the BOS, they might refuse.

It's too bad - I think he's done a good job with a crappy hand dealt to him.

FYI for new applicants: After live scan it took 64 calendar days to receive notice to proceed with 16 hour training.

So just received my denial letter from the sheriffs office. It says do to recent marijuana use. I’m not a frequent user. I don’t smoke marijuana. It was a one time thing with some friends as a groomsman party type thing. Is there anything that can be done if I appeal? Or is it an automatic denial no matter what?

The recent marijuana use was in June of 2019.

So.... You do smoke marijuana. Once is smoking it. Sheriff Jones is very strict on this.
