Sounds like it should be easy to just pay by cc over the phone, but I know in the past the sheriff's department only excepted cash or checks in the past.

For anyone interested I will share my timeline and current status.

I submitted my application and supporting docs to OCSD on May 14 and was given an interview date in the third week (sorry I forgot the actual day) of Sept. I was checking once a day to see if I could get an earlier appt with no luck. I took a break from checking knowing I would have to wait for the live scan to complete and at the time the average live scan completion was taking 8-10 weeks so regardless of my interview date it was going to be a waiting game.

I received an email (automated from permitium) on 6/8 notifying me that my interview date had been rescheduled to 7/21. On 7/12 I received another email from a staff member of the CCW unit letting me know she had an appt opening on 7/18 if I wanted to move my appt up a few days so I did.

The interview was almost 30 mins keeping in mind the first 15 or so were actual items related to my CCW application and the remaining time we spent talking about misc stuff. The tone of the interview was chill and the person I met with was really nice and didn't make me feel rushed or nervous at all.

Regarding good cause - I was asked for a couple of supplemental items related to my good cause prior to the court ruling and even though the ruling came down after the request I still submitted the required docs regardless if they needed them or not I wasn't going to just not submit them and hope it was ok. When we started the interview she led off with "I see you uploaded the supplemental good cause docs we requested but because good cause is currently not required there is no reason to review those files". So no, good cause is not at this time required when submitting your application and required files.

There are 6 people currently assigned to the CCW unit at OCSD, 2 of which were out this week for reasons I did not ask. They are "receiving hundreds of applications per day" most likely because of the good cause ruling.

Immediately after my interview I received an email stating "Our records show you have completed all the required steps and we are only pending live scan results". I submitted my live scan info on 5/23 and on 5/25 the CA and FBI portions were completed and like everyone else I am waiting for the Firearms to clear. My interviewer said live scan is now currently taking 4-6 months to complete and they do not receive any info until all three are complete. I am only coming up on week 9......

Finally, I did ask why I was chosen to have my interview moved up so much and her answer was simply "when we have an open time slot to fill an applicant is randomly chosen to have the option of securing an earlier appt.". I am buying a lottery ticket this week boys!

Around 10:00 this morning I got my 2nd letter from Permitum that my renewal app. has been approved and that I could call the sheriff's office to pay $81 and get my permit mailed to me.
I've tried calling a few times and the call always goes to voice mail telling me to email them. But, on my second call today--Saturday--a nice lady answered and processed my cc payment.
So, our Sheriff is obviously working Saturday's to help us out, as much as can be allowed by our overlords in Sacramento.
            Change is in the air!!

It's an awful software design, actually. A user should be directed straight to the first available appointment, instead of getting no avail screen and having to continuously click until finds the first spot open.

A third party vendor is running the administrative stuff. They don't have access to the agency's workload/staffing/planning. So the long date is input and the agency adjusts for their scale.

The default is standard programming procedure. What happens next is determined by management. You make a good point.

If the first available appointment is in April 2023, there is no need to show all unavailable Dec 2022 to Mar 2023 days. Jump straight to the first available day in April and let the user make their choice. If an earlier day becomes available, then show it on the calendar. ATM, having to scroll though several months of unavailable days till reaching the first open spot is a terrible UX concept. At the very least, make a new button, call it 'Find earliest appt'.
