Current (01/21/20) Orange County CCW Application Details
Here's my current experience, note: pricing for classes may vary, other prices are known standards.
Note 1: I was told from our class instructor that when you make the appointment date at the end of your online application, you will receive your CCW permit at that date and time. The decision will already be made, barring other circumstances and they will ask you if anything new needs to be divulged, and if everything is still accurate and true, you will get your permit onsite; of course if it is not denied.
Note 2: I was told from our class instructor that OCSD is upgrading/revamping their CCW permitting process to make the process easier and more efficient with time; however, during this transition (now and for next few months) the process might be delayed and take a little longer than usual. also Don Barnes "wants all residents to have a CCW permit"
12/29/19 - Completed CCW California permit class (+$225) and Multi-State (Utah, non-resident) training class (additional +$125)
Registered 2 pistols, (2nd pistol is +$25)
- Received certificate for Utah non-resident CCW training, which entitles concealed carry in 36 states, or 12 more than standard CA resident CCW.
- Range and classroom time was required. 72 rounds for primary pistol. 20 rounds for secondary pistol. Good hits on target required at 3, 5 and 7 yards. Unsure about pass/fail rate but there were a few that failed the marksmanship/range qualification.
- Gun inspection is done by qualifying class instructor, the OCSD does not inspect your firearm; however if your gun is out of spec (modified trigger, barrel, etc) it will be discovered if there is an incident and this will be ALL bad news, so keep your CCW weapon(s) un-modified except for grips and sites (generally).
- Instructor heavily suggest joining USCCA or NRA or Armed Citizens Educational Foundation for legal insurance.
01/15/20 - Live Scan completed (link to Live Scan providers: https://oag.ca.gov/fingerprints/locations)
- UPS store, approximately 25-30 minutes, basic fingerprinting of both hands. $118 total fee. You will get an "ATI" number used to track the progress of your Live Scan. 3 categories of Live Scan for CCW: #1, CA - #2, FBI, #3 Firearms. The CA and FBI sections were complete within 24 hours. Assuming Firearms wont complete until after you apply for CCW permit online.
01/21/20 - Online Application for permit completed online, link to OCSD site for new or renewing applicants: https://ocsd.permitium.com/ccw/start) and fee schedule (http://www.ocsd.org/about_ocsd/servi...w/fee_schedule)
Take your time, allow at least 30-45 minutes for application
*Before applying* photograph/scan you drivers license, 2 proof of residency (utility bill, tax bill, etc (more details on website), and supplemental good cause images, E.g., if your good cause statement suggests you carry expensive equipment, provide photos of equipment. I also provided 2 letters of good character from friends (not required or needed today)
Earliest available appointment for interview was March 25th, 2020
I still haven't mailed the application to AZ for the non-resident CCW permit, but i'll get to it soon, but the fees have been paid electronically.
That's all I have for now, i'm literally on day 1 of completing all of the processes and waiting...
