I had logged on to their website a year or so ago to mentally prepare for what I would need to do, but its changed now and its a bit confusing. Do I now need to get training BEFORE acceptance? Am I also paying for the renewal beforehand? This seems very strange since theres no guarantee of approval. Also I'm worried as I don't have much time left and don't want it to lapse. Also when googling for training locations I read on one such places website about having 5 guns on your permit instead of the old 3. Did it change??
Also I've been hearing that we need just cause statements to get approved now. I am a restaurant manager at a location that has had forced burglaries as well as verbal/physical assaults on myself and staff, in addition to working as the sole person into the wee hours after the rest of the staff has left, closing up the back office with large sums of cash in my possession. Do these all sound like good enough reasons? And would they want any evidence of these statements? I'm not positive I can easily get the police report numbers. But they all occurred in the sheriff departments jurisdiction, so can they maybe look them up by the name and address of the restaurant?
Thanks so much for any and all help, sorry for the million questions, I was just a bit blindsided by endless threads when I tried to find the info on my own, and would really appreciate someone in the know helping me out .

For a renewal, get the online app and fill it out, send it in with our proof of residency. You pay when you pickup. They'll confirm your application and progress, and ask you for supporting documentation where required.
And yes, articulate a good cause statement - they are pretty much accepting anything - just make it about 'threat of grave bodily injury or death' as those are the only things you can defend against with lethal force. Too many are using 'they'll steal my stuff' as good cause and that won't work. Or 'they look like shady characters' - nope.

There are a few available for peer review of your statement - check out the thread on GCS.

Oh, and yes, they'll require a training cert from an approved trainer for what meets renewal training. You can either do that ahead of time or when they give preliminary approval and ask for it.

File asap. Your just cause seems suitable, although documentation will likely be required.

I think they maybe somewhat more demanding in the just cause area than before,

but they will tell you exactly what you/they need to complete your application successfully...

Once you app is complete, you'll have a good indication from them, before you do your renewal training.

And yes, up to five guns are acceptable, so start shopping now...

Thank you both so much, apparently times have changed yet again and I was actually able to get ahold of someone in their office and ask questions to my hearts content (not an option before), so I'm on track again! Also there are unlimited amount of guns allowed as of a few weeks ago, but you have to show proficiency with each one. So it looks like I'm gonna be at the range with the instructor for a few hours shooting away

          FB find from Julie Schupak:

          BREAKING NEWS FOR ORANGE COUNTY!!!
If you have an interview date after November 14th, you MUST go online and submit your application and all documents. Everybody that has an appointment between now and the second week in January should get an email with this information!
The cap of 5 guns on a permit will be lifted November 14th as well! That means, if you want to qualify with it, you can add it to your permit... unlimited guns!
          You heard it here 1st!!!

UPDATE: You can NOT apply for renewal more than 90 days before your permit!

Well excuse the hell out of me!!!!
I was posting info I thought was of interest. I am not in OC.
Last flippen time I do that.

FYI it no longer says that in RED it now says The Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s online CCW application system is not able to process credit card transactions at this time. Please select pay by check or money order when filling out your application. Payments will be made at the time of license issuance. Applicants who paid by credit card will have their full payment refunded. All applications must be submitted online and appointment dates/time will remain in effect.

When I renewed in January of 2017 Melissa told me I should start about 6 months out next time due to backlog issues. Sure hope they fixed them!

They did - they hired a bunch of people and got a new super - 90 renewal app is now all that is required as of August 2017.

I had my initial interview yesterday. Ended up waiting for 45 minutes due to the new system crashing. Other than that I was in and out in 20 minutes. Just need to add a few more supporting documents to my GCS and get my training/live scan done. My detective said that everything seems good to go provided my live scan comes back clean.

I had my appointment today. All my documentation had been submitted prior and my live scan was in before I arrived. I waited 15-20 but my actual sit down with the deputy was no more than 10 minutes.

He took my picture and said I was "basically approved. Just wait for the email to come down and pick up the permit." When I acted surprised, he said, "if you can stand up, you're breathing, and your live scan comes back clean, you're getting approved."

He went on to say 98% of applicants are getting approved (that is a number I've heard before), said he thought it was way too many, but that it wasn't his call.

                        YMMV

What is the current number of firearms that can be listed on your license? I have not been able to locate that information on the OCSD website. It was 3, then I heard 5, then I heard unlimited.

As of November 1st, you can have an unlimited number of firearms.

I don't have a link, but we were informed at my CCW training course (Hansen Firearms Training, whom I highly recommend). Here's what Ben Hansen also posted on his Facebook page in late September:

"I just received word from the OCSD that within the next few weeks they will be rolling out a paperless online application system. Along with this system, they will be allowing an UNLIMITED number of handguns on your permit. The current limit is 5...."

I also could not find anything on the OCSD website. However, I have seen this same information on other CCW training websites so it seems the OCSD informed the approved trainers.
