To answer your question, before firearm registration in CA when you were buying a gun, the state had no idea that you are purchasing a firearm. The FBI just runs a background check to see if your background fits the criteria. So no, they have no idea what kind of gun you bought. The qualifications on the LASD website does STATE that your firearm MUST be registered to you (or your spouse, I believe.) You should advise them the situation and once you get the go to do the firearms training you should go buy a gun and wait the 10 days. Can anyone tell me please....
The guns I intend to request were purchased maybe 40 years ago. They were all bought at a California dealer, with whatever paperwork was done at that time. I recall it being just filled out by hand, computers barely existed then...
Would the state still know about them? Or should I fill out a firearm ownership report before applying for a CCW?
Is there a way to get a list of the guns the DOJ knows I own?
Thanks!Applied on 04/5/2021

@Michael,
The easiest thing honestly, instead of figuring out if a half century old gun is registered to the state, go buy a Glock 19 and use that as your CCW.
It's just a lot of work to figure out if and how the relics are registered. And also finding a kydex holster for them...
As you read in the posts the difference between one week of submittals could mean a month wait time
People who submitted the 2nd week of April are done with training and live scans. Waiting for pick up.
Half the people on the 3rd week of April are just going into their interviews now.
The more time you waste figuring out if and how those are registered, will add on at least a month and maybe 4 months to your interview. So my suggestion is forget about your boomer guns. Go buy a Glock 19. A good belt. A good kydex holster and submit your application as soon as you can.
@sourNoob, depends on the class. All class's are different.
TRB in socal - we could buy ammo at the range. Our class needed a holster because we practiced our draw, you're also on a firing line with 20 other people.
Call your training provider and see what they need. Chances are, it's listed on their website and you just need to read.
When did you submit? Your question seems kind of dumb so maybe you didn't even do your interview yet.
Agree with you 100%. No point of finding the needle in the haystack.Applied on 04/5/2021

Guns that I bought in the 1970's show up on AFIS (DOJ Database) They were handwritten registrations that were mailed to DOJ and there was a 15 day wait.To answer your question, before firearm registration in CA when you were buying a gun, the state had no idea that you are purchasing a firearm. From what I know, it was in the year of 1998 that handguns required registration in CA. There is always a FBI check but majority of states do not have registration. That may be the issue. I would just buy a compact Glock or a S & W Shield. You can call the CA DOJ and see if you can register them. I don't want to go to off topic but good luck my friend.Applied on 04/5/2021

1998 was when people who moved to California had to start registering their handguns.
1991 was when all PPT had to be done through an FFL so they were automatically registered.
Before that dealers still filled out the forms and mailed them in.LA County CCW HolderComment

How dare you presumptuous peasants show such temerity as paying for a government background check before your masters have deigned to allow you to do so.

DROS of handguns began in.
1924
Same year that CCW license went into effect.
Lots of crap advice getting spread around.
If you have a handgun you want to put on CCW. And don't know if it's registered to you in AFS. Just register it.
Sign into CFARS and fill out appropriate form. And pay the obligatory $19 state extortion fee.
To paraphrase another member here. "If you're to lazy to read the previous 144 pages. You don't deserve a CCW"!

IMO, not reading every single page in this thread means you don’t really want it that bad, which in turn, means you really don’t need it.
I remember being super excited when I began reading the beginning of this thread.
It was late night. I put on my jammies. Turned on the kettle for some hot cocoa. Put my ar-15 to sleep. Then finally once things quieted down for the night, sat down prepared to spend the next hour reading page after page. It was awesome and I was instantly filled with so much knowledge that helped me throughout the process.
Do yourselves and everyone here a favor. Read this entire thread if a CCW is important for you….. BEFORE asking a question. Unless your question is a special one, it’s already been answered.
