WTF is wrong with CGN and why can't it be fixed ?

You've been a member longer than I have. The reason he kept to the original version of vBulletin was that iTrader only worked with that version. So, to keep the trading going and that portion of the membership happy/mollified, he kept with it, warning that any update/upgrade would involve exactly what we're experiencing. As swalt said, 'the word' (from Librarian) is that the host we'd been on went out of business. It was moved to the Cloud, which proved too expensive. It's been moved to another server and that, along with making the old play well with the new, is the source of the trouble.

I just quoted what Swalt wrote about the actions Kes took. I stay with my original post! In the in the two or three months that Calguns has been like it is now (or worse), it could have been built from scratch and the data exported, massaged, and imported to have a brand NEW CG. Just my sort of informed opinion. BTW, I had PM'd Kes twice, offering to help, and no reply.

A 'new' Calguns isn't and never has been the objective. As Librarian noted, this was something outside of Kestryll's "choice" and, if you go back and read his posts over the years, he's warned us that this was going to happen with any upgrades. As has been discussed on numerous threads, it's not necessarily as simple and straightforward as many attempt to portray it. Kestryll's choice, one which many actually agree with, is maintenance of the 'history,' which includes access to the older threads and that can be a bit tricky given the age of the threads and the variant of the software they were posted on. As you note, several iterations have come and gone, where it can be 'involved' just to move to the next iteration and, since we're living it, we don't have to get into having to transition through a number of iterations to bring things up-to-date.

Just like SWalt's posts. There are quite a number of them and many cannot be addressed in isolation, even if it is 'convenient,' for whatever reason. He's covered many of the things I just said, on here and .org. In fact, it's something SWalt observed himself in this thread...

Its been discussed ad nauseam on many threads. But since you can't log on, like everyone else unless you spend hours trying or lucky its working when you do, then you wouldn't know. BTW.....keeping iTrader was one of the reason this forum is in the shape its in. iTrader stopped being upgraded to work with new versions of vBullentin a long time ago and GCN couldn't upgrade and keep iTrade at the same timer. Hence, CGN never upgraded to keep iTrader.

Nobody with any credibility has said that CGN was sold. The story is, the old server CGN was hosted on was shut down. Kes, the owner, upgraded to a new version of vBulletin and moved CGN to a hosted cloud server. The cloud server really didn't work out so he moved it to a host with a physical server and that is where it is today. Upgrading from a ancient version of vB to the new version and from physical to a cloud to a new physical server didn't and isn't going smoothly, as you know. IMO It is like going from windows 95 to 11 and expecting all your programs to work. That is the basic story. For anything else you'll have to search other threads. Peace out!

You responded starting with "If this is true..." Are you doubting Librarian's word? Are you doubting the numerous threads Kestryll has posted about this over the years? I mean, it's something you even noted yourself...

If this is true, then Kes should NOT be trying to admin the site! Kes should have upgraded vBulletin, OR moved to the cloud server......NOT BOTH! Until one of the changes was running well, then make the other change. When making a big change and changing two things at once, it's very difficult to troubleshoot.

It seems there are fewer ads on the site. That cannot help the revenue generated, and I suspect there are fewer contributors/donations as well.
It would be helpful if Kes or someone else in the know would chime in with an update.

If the site was available more than 10-20 minutes a week, just maybe they could generate more ad revenue. It's ridiculous how the guy in charge is allowing it to be destroyed without so much as a comment why.

I don’t know what changed but over the past week every time I visited CGN it loaded!



Now if it would require me to log in only once to log on….

(I fill in my user name, tab the password field for it to automatically enter my password, then I hit log on and nothing changes. So I have to repeat all that and then it logs me on. Minor annoyance.)
