WTF is wrong with CGN and why can't it be fixed ?

Calguns has gone from being the premier Calif gun site with so many incredible guys, who have many years of knowledge and are a phenomenal resource. Now I'm lucky to log on in 10 tries, then it takes a minute to load a page, but most often I get a 504 error. Is it lack of money or is it a crappy server or do the owners of CGN just not care anymore ?

I just went to Caguns for the first time after seeing others talk about it and their traffic has increased exponentially since the issues here. I had 250+ positive feedbacks over 10 years, gone, my friends list, gone and the new site is much more difficult to navigate. I don't get it, but I'm not ready to leave CGN yet, but I'm close.

Anyone else feel the same ?

Its been discussed ad nauseam on many threads. But since you can't log on, like everyone else unless you spend hours trying or lucky its working when you do, then you wouldn't know. BTW.....keeping iTrader was one of the reason this forum is in the shape its in. iTrader stopped being upgraded to work with new versions of vBullentin a long time ago and GCN couldn't upgrade and keep iTrade at the same timer. Hence, CGN never upgraded to keep iTrader.

Much like my view of California, I’ll be here to the end. I owe much to the site, the users, and Kes, even never having met the man or 99.98% of all of YOU. Even the azzholes and dickheads, I miss them all.

Ok Walt, I get that sacrifices have to be made for an upgrade, but CGN has turned to crap and it seems that there's no explanation or plan to improve it going forward. Meanwhile the site is impossible to use and good people are leaving. I was told by a guy who's been here longer than I have, that CGN was sold and the new owners and they tried to save money by going to a different server. So maybe you can tell me if the site will get better or if this is the best we can expect ?

Nobody with any credibility has said that CGN was sold. The story is, the old server CGN was hosted on was shut down. Kes, the owner, upgraded to a new version of vBulletin and moved CGN to a hosted cloud server. The cloud server really didn't work out so he moved it to a host with a physical server and that is where it is today. Upgrading from a ancient version of vB to the new version and from physical to a cloud to a new physical server didn't and isn't going smoothly, as you know. IMO It is like going from windows 95 to 11 and expecting all your programs to work. That is the basic story. For anything else you'll have to search other threads. Peace out!

If this is true, then Kes should NOT be trying to admin the site! Kes should have upgraded vBulletin, OR moved to the cloud server......NOT BOTH! Until one of the changes was running well, then make the other change. When making a big change and changing two things at once, it's very difficult to troubleshoot.

I'm by no means an "official", its all from what I gleaned from various threads. I'm not even here to argue about it. It went from the old server that was shut down and CGN was living on borrowed time, to the cloud and back to a different physical server. The move to the cloud server did include the upgrade, the version we are now on. If you like to go back over all the threads about the CGN upgrade and learn something new, by all means have at it.

Just here to post my frustration. Maybe 1 in 20 tries connects. How long has it been since the start of the change: a year? Feels like 2 years.

I noticed on my phone it almost never loads, but it's a lot better when I try and login on my desktop. It's rough. CAguns is a lot easier to get on. But their user interface kinda sucks.

Glad I am out of Kommiefornia now, but I still look at threads here.

You've been a member longer than I have. The reason he kept to the original version of vBulletin was that iTrader only worked with that version. So, to keep the trading going and that portion of the membership happy/mollified, he kept with it, warning that any update/upgrade would involve exactly what we're experiencing. As swalt said, 'the word' (from Librarian) is that the host we'd been on went out of business. It was moved to the Cloud, which proved too expensive. It's been moved to another server and that, along with making the old play well with the new, is the source of the trouble.
