Putting primers in a campfire with kids / people around it is not to bright a move. They fragment and expand with decent velocity. Think worst case of kids watching campfire and pop one loses an eye. Try putting a ring of painters plastic around campfire at a radius of 5 feet and throw in a handful of primers and see if any holes in plastic.Comment

Or use them to make ammo....Comment

Your conclusion is not scientifically based on facts. There is nothing unsafe about throwing live primers into a campfire. They aren't frag grenades afterall.Putting primers in a campfire with kids / people around it is not to bright a move. They fragment and expand with decent velocity. How could you do that!?
Some people would have you believe primers are like claymore mines lol.Comment

I've used dropped primers too many time to count, and I can count to potato at least once times!
Seriously, these weren't made in a clean room, if there's a little dust in one it'll still ignite the powder charge in your brass. Just put the ones you don't "trust" in your plinking ammo, or throw the ones you don't trust in the trash.

Primer compound is shipped in water.I was replying to another post when I figured I should ask here .
What do you do with primers you don't trust ? I had a primer tube bust and primers went all over . I did not trust them , so I soaked in water for a few days . Loaded one with a lee hand loader and a plastic bullet . It still went bang . I dumped the rest in a can of latex paint .
WHAT do you do with primers you don't trust ? Before that happened , I would tape them to a target and get out the Benjamin pellet gun .

Thanks , so far it will be WD-40 , then check with a pump up Benjamin on a target . If they go boom , I won't use the spray again .
Some of you probably think I am too causoues - but I do check my spare tires and oil / tranny fluid when I buy gas and change the batteries in smoke alarm twice a year .
My bench is grounded and has rubber on top where the Lee is mounted . I don't just reload on the bench .life member - CRPA and NRA

You're not being too cautious, I do all those things as well. You're perhaps overly stressed about something that's less of a big deal than you assumed. Then you put your ignorance out into the public forum, which is brave. Hopefully you have the answer that clears your conscience. Thanks , so far it will be WD-40 , then check with a pump up Benjamin on a target . If they go boom , I won't use the spray again .

And then I realized that a LOT of things have changed since someone had a problem here or there and many issues that I was overly cautious about I was being overly cautious for NO reason.
Example, If a primer falls on the floor, I cuss it out. Once a second or third primer falls on the floor I cuss them out too, then I stop what I am doing and go hunt them down. THEN they get put back in the mix to be used like all the rest. If I pick up a primer that decides to come apart, I will carefully put it back together and then use it first.
Hey! These primers are worth .02 so I AINT planning on throwing them out anytime soon...
I used to be all careful when decapping a live primer. Like for example when the die crushes a shell that is not centered properly; but not anymore. Now I set it aside and when I gotta decap, I decap, and then put it right back into a piece of brass that I already resized and it just needs a primer before a charge... Hell, depending on my mood I think I might even be extra harsh when I decap the primer. I have yet to see any of them go off. There is simply not the speed there yet. But how many people echo the words of extreme caution when decapping a live primer? Yeah, maybe I should get some bomb protection gear too right? Come on now...
The new reloaders clearly need to know that they can get injured and thus they need to be careful with reloading, but come on now, the ridiculousness needs to stop at one point.
Now I normally do not care what other reloaders do with their stuff, but you gotta admit, some of the lengths people go to to dispose of live primers is pretty retardedly ridiculous. But hey, if that is how you want to save money, go for it.
Now shooting them with a pellet gun, okay, not so bad because they are still being used. Do they go off? Now I wanna try, it could be something cool to try out. But dousing them with this and with that and then burying them inside this or that- come on now... If your end result does NOT make them go bang, then you need to work on a better end result. If you put them in a pile and through solvents and various chem baths extract the priming compound to use in a larger detonator of some sort (like for say homemade semtex or c-4) then that is great too. Whatever you do, use them, don;t just let them get broken and toss them aside
They want to work for you if you will just give them the chance.
