For what its worth, I think there is a difference between "going to the range to go shooting" and going out to a range to "go participate in a training class". There is also a difference in the skills beng taught in the wide variety of classes available to civilians / LEO /military personnel. The degree of safety precautions would be dictated by the degree of complexity. That said, wearing body armor around a bunch of shooters "new to you" is not unlike putting on your seatbelt when getting into a car being driven by someone else; you wouldn't get into the car if you knew they were unsafe and likely to be negligent in their operation of the car, but on the other hand accidents happen so you put on your seatbelt anyway.

All the "kit" is certainly not needed or enjoyable for a trip to the range to "go shooting". On the other hand to go "training" in such skills two man (or more) dynamic structure clearing in a ballistic shoot house, two man team tactics, vehicle engagement / assault tactics, various multi person CQB / room combat classes, one can justify wearing all kinds of protective gear, body armor included. In fact,if you are going to be around a group of people you DO NOT KNOW who are being taught complex weapons manipulation skills, you may very well want to armor up, not knowing what to expect out of the people around you.

I think that if you are a civilian, taking classes teaching LEO and military level techniques and skills, particularly WITH LEO/military personnel, then you probably should be training in the correct level of protective body armor. Wearing all your kit to the range just to go shooting .... Well that makes you a tool.

I think this thread highlights the different kinds of shooters we have here.

I, for one, would be pissed if someone showed up in flip flops and shorts with my group in our spot. Chances are, that dude aint helping with setting up targets or picking up brass. Ill take a guy with a dump pouch and thigh holster any day over a guy with a tank top and backwards hat.

I'm not very operatory and I don't wear camo/tactical garb. But sometimes wearing armor when just 'going shooting' may also be a good idea. When I do, I try to conceal it.

I've found that the older I get, the less I care what people think. Maybe it's a matter of life experience, but it takes a long time for some people to get genuinely comfortable in their own skin. I think that's why most "posers" tend to be young.

I dress casually to the range, so casual I don't use a dedicated range bag.

That fat guy's range/shop (and this vid) is right down the street from me, get to hear some pretty good eruptions of gunfire now and then when they have LEO guests or other comp shooters out

When I go to the range and just shooting for fun I wear casual clothing. When I was in the Army and later in LE, I trained how I was going to be dressed while performing my duties. My LE agency actually required body armor on tactical shoots. If you are taking a tactical class, you should train how you plan to fight.

Why don't you watch him shoot sometime? He runs with all the gear he needs while he is shooting. He doesn't wear unnecessary tacticool crap though.

Better yet, you're local enough to shoot a match with him sometime. Why not go to some local matches and show him how it's done? I'm sure he would love to learn from you.
