I wore assless chaps to the rifle range once, but I got a pretty bad sunburn and I couldn't sit down for a week. Never again. Now I just wear them to indoor ranges only. I shoot better from the bench with just a gas mask and a unitard anyway. The unitard offers better protection from the sun, and it's black, so I still look like a ninja.

Bickering aside, there's a lot of common sense in this thread.

1) To each his own.

2) Train/Shoot the way you're gonna fight. Military/LEOs should wear appropriate equipment (kit). Average Joe (red blooded law abiding responsible armed citizen) should wear what they are likely to be wearing if an armies confrontation should arise (jeans, shirt, shorts, slacks, dress shirt, and/or birthday suit).

3) At the end of the day, as long as you're training/shooting you're doing your part and are ahead of the game.

I always wear my non Mil-Spec, unmarked T-Shirt and denim shorts/pants.
(As well as my non Mil-Spec attenuators and eye protection.)
Sometimes I go all out and wear a non Mil-Spec hat that is not camo.

I could be accused of impersonating retired military with my current haircut, but it's the scary black guns that "shame me" the most.
Maybe I should get into the spirit of the latest legislative stupidity and paint them in fluorescent colors.

This is how I kit out for the range. It ensures me a couple of empty benches on either side.


Operatoriness is mostly harmless. They're having fun with their hobby and keeping the gun industry healthy. Besides, it's fun out shooting the guys with optics and rail mounted what-not with my lever action.

I was at the range a few months ago and a guy in his twenties was all tact out with the helmet, load bearing vest, gloves, etc. I could tell most people on the range and myself included were wondering why he had all of the gear on. We actually thought it was kind of strange. However, the guy was a really nice and sociable person. Helpful to some of the new shooters and friendly. He didn't seem embarrassed at all. To each his own in my opinion. As long as they aren't some crazy psycho, than whatever they're wearing isn't causing any damage.

You know someone has gone "full operator" when they are wearing their "operator gloves". You never know when you may have to execute a fast rope insertion/extraction in between target breaks...
