Tactical Excess?

As I read this thread, the sig line of one of our members, -hanko, comes immediately to mind.

The tacticool stuff is just not for me. If somebody else wants to do it, let them burn off their dollars.

One of the things that does concern me about it is the image it presents of gun owners. We already have to fight the image of the tooth deficient, mooshine drinking, quick on the trigger, intolerant bubba. Now we have to try to overcome the mall ninja. Images like this do nothing but turn people against gun ownership.

I've been a member of both calguns.net and arf since they started.

If I'm interested in what's (usually what's not) happening in California, this is the place.

If I need tech info on weapons, especially the AR variety it's arf a hundred times over. Same with reviews, vendor forums, and don't forget an equipment exchange where *****holes, fakes, and flakes are quickly outed and banned.

I'd say the same for the FAL Files relative to that weapon.

Calguns is THE place for the Gecko45 clone. Where else can you see the most basic questions asked 4 times a day with a complete inability to teach oneself instead of asking the same stuff over and over and over?

Where else do you see the same "tactical" overkill of the same weapons over and over, etc.

Where else can you find two polls where fully half of those polled voted in favor of mandatory background checks...Jesus Tap-Dancing Christ, this is a GUN forum.

I'd expect a preponderance here of 13'ers who literally live in the basement stuck on a video game. A lack of self-confidence and inability to make a simple decision...whether it's about which weapon to buy, which ammo is best for home defense, will they make fun of me at the range if I show up with a ...

Most interesting over the last couple of months are the posts requesting helpers at a city council meeting, show booth, etc...many are the requests, few are the volunteers, and many are the "Gee, I'd like to, but...". And we all wonder why California gun laws worsen every year.

As to training, Gun Talk had a guy on a month or two ago who recommended training like you live...If you're in street clothes most of your life, train with that in mind. You're far more effective if your training reflects your normal lifestyle, instead of the Armageddon.

As to drop-leg holsters...I use one while hunting as it doesn't tend to foul in my backpack, but since I don't normally carry with one, I practice religiously with my carry holster.

for weapon mounted lights:

you probably shoot what you can't identify

easier to shoot a pistol more consistently with a light mounted over any of the gun + light in support hand methods IME

a long gun without a light is fine if you're not worried about pointing it at someone in the dark without the ability to identify them without taking one hand off of a solid firing hold

if you are using a headlamp, you're "always on" and are a bullet magnet if the armed opponent is anywhere near you

call me a ninja if you'd like, but I prefer all HD weapons to have white lights attached (some with red filters); I'm not a fan of lasers, but I see their place sometimes

A lot of people go to carbine classes and wear all their tactical gear because it's fun and they enjoy it, and that is a perfectly good reason.

I agree there are a lot of guys who look and act like nuts and have no concept of how to actually survive in a end of the world as we know it scenario but who cares it's not you.

I see more of what you describe in Airsoft than real shooting

So long as they are safe and not obnoxious, whom am I to judge. They might even be better than me.

I do share the same annoyance when people tell me I absolutely need a handgun to fight my way dramatically to my primary or take off a fallen foe

I used a drop leg holster in a training class because it is what was most comfortable for me. I do not have a carry permit and no reason for a standard hip holster so if SHTF, I will be stapping on the drop leg holster I have.

After trying out other holsters, it's what worked best for me.

I've had back surgery on L5 so either chest or leg holster is about all I can use. Any type of belt hurts.
