I brought one of the first glock model 22's that were available and carried it in the police academy and on duty as a police officer. I was against Glock before I brought one got it cheap, carried for several years then got rid of it.

    I don't dislike Glock's but i don't love Glocks either. What I don't like about Glocks:

    01. They are all built off the same basic pattern
    02. Your shots are all the same trigger pull
    03. There not metal and some of the Glocks have had issues over time with them. I don't think we will ever see a Glock last 50 years or so, I think it will break down.
    04. Doesn't have a manual safety, all it takes is a finger to the trigger.

I like a gun that has a manual safety, I know of at least one police officer's life that was safety because the person couldn't get the gun off safety. I want a gun that I have a longer trigger pull on the first shot so that I give the person all the benefit of the doubt possible before I shot. I then want the other rounds to be shot much easier once we have decided that we are in a shooting situation. I also want a gun that will be around and in good shape 40 years from now.

I own one but not a fan of the type of handgun in general. There are much nicer handguns out there for the money, IMO.

There are glocks that are almost 30 years old still out there and working just fine.

ANY gun will eventually need springs replaced, and other parts like extractors, ejectors, firing pins, etc.

Even metal framed guns will "fall apart" with enough rounds through them. Everything from cracked frames and slides, shot out barrels, magazine failures, and so on.

HK vp70's are close to 40 years old and those haven't just crumbled into dust due to polymer frames either. There are plastic components on some rifles going back 50 years that haven't just turned to dust yet.

This isn't 1975. Plastic in firearms isn't new, and hasn't been for decades. Most people's glocks(or just about any polymer pistol) that only sees a few hundred rounds through it a year at most, will last 50 years with regular maintenance like you would need with a steel frame pistol. You're kidding yourself if you think a steel frame gun is going to last longer without maintenance just because of the frame material.

Also, to the poster who carried one in an academy, you're the first person I have heard prefer conventional da/SA pull. The vast majority are the opposite and this was an express selling point for the Glock, same trigger pull every time. Many have difficulty doing two pulls, and departments can't afford to pay for those throwaway first shots.

To be honest I don't know about all of this. The P99 is DA/SA and I love it. I can use the slide or the decocker to set things up ahead of time to avoid the initial heavy pull, or to get it back. I don't know if most DA/SA are arranged as well, but I absolutely love it in the tiny 9mm. The way the Glock and 1911 work seem appropriate for their larger calibers.

As the USSS and many other LE agencies demonstrate, the idea that DA/SA is hard to shoot is a BS myth.

Glocks appeal to police departments with Ebenezer Scrooge muncipal budget managers. Too many officers are on patrol today with 100 rounds or less of annual live fire "training" . For someone with no skills a Glock is easier to shoot, but that's missing the vital point that a LEO should be a good shot. I suppose its cheaper to buy new guns and wall spackle for the NDs instead of paying for ammo.

                  Well put.

I've owned more brands/models of pistols than I can readily recall. Each had it's good points and each had things I would have preferred had been different. If the perfect pistol truly existed, we'd all own the same gun.

A lot of FUD here one of the best SWAT teams in the state, switched from a H&K 9mm to a Glock 35. It won out over several models that were tested, money was not an object in the test. They shoot more handgun rounds in a day of training then most Calgunners shoot all year.

That's including all classes. If you just look at Production, it's even more heavily weighted towards Glocks:

They're popular with the USPSA because they're easy to shoot quickly and accurately. They're also popular with LEOs because Glock markets aggressively to them. This isn't a bad thing, Glocks are good guns.

Problem is, with that kind of popularity comes a degree of fanboi devotion, beyond just "Glock Perfection." They can be obnoxious and narrow-minded and quite emotionally invested in their choices and purchases. That kind of fanaticism, of course, is sure to generate an anti-Glock backlash.

Are Glocks perfect? No one tool is perfect for everyone. It is a good tool, however. It does it's job well. I just like having more than one tool in my tool bag. Variety being the spice of life and all that.

When I went to my LGS for my first pistol purchase. I had a Glock in mind. Fortunately they carried several brands. I left with (10 days later) a Beretta PX4. It just felt better in my hand. I've never been sorry. 4K rounds through it and it never a FTF or any issue with it.

Lots of good guns out there including Glock. The reason why there are so many is that there isn't just one solution that fits everyone.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

I'm not weighing in on the debate, I am noting it exists. I have had people I shoot with sell da/SA firearms rather than put in the training to overcome the issue.

My favorite home defense pistol is a well worn SIG 226, and it's never been an issue for me. But it is for some. The answer is work on it, and a lot of people will not do so. I knew one guy whose stated plan was to toss the first shot and get serious after the weapon was cycled.

I also know plenty of people who cock every revolver shot they ever take at the range. I can't answer for that mentality.
