Obviously the OP knew something was up and decided to put his friend in that position. He said himself that the burglars had been after his safe for a year.

Had safe stolen!

Sorry for your loss, we had 11 guns stolen in the 60's and never recovered a one. Also an "inside job".
Gee I've been meaning to bolt my safe down ever since I got it. Figured since it weighs 700lbs empty nobody is gong to walk off with it.
Think I'll bolt it down TODAY.Comment

It makes me sick to my stomach every time I see a 'safe stolen' thread. I hope you recover your stuff bro.
One security upgrade I did was to put a smaller door on my gun room AFTER the safe was installed so even if they cut the bolts, they'll hafta' knock the jambs/wall out. Anything to slow them down...Comment

You may want to look into a "smash-proof" system. Meaning it always sends a signal to the company as soon as it goes off and they are waiting for you to send a disarm command to them. So if a bad guy comes in and smashes the panel...too bad signal was sent already.Unfortunately most, but not all, alarm systems can be disabled by merely smashing the control panel circuit board before the alarm is sent. There is always a delay on the systems if you are gone because you don't want the system to go off every time you come home. Even more unfortunate is that the alarm panel typically is making a lot of noise and makes it VERY easy for a criminal to locate the alarm-they are typically VERY close to the control keypad.Comment

you could get a system that runs wireless using cell signals, then not have to worry about phone lines being cut. added benefit of being a wireless control panel (except for power) also.I'm curious to know your source. If that's the case I'm wasting my money, if it's that simple to disable a alarm system. Everything is hooked up to the phone lines and if they get cut off it sends an automatic signal and I receive a phone call. It's a pain in the butt because I get false alarms sometimes, but all I have to do is look on my Galaxy and pull up the surveillance camera's.Comment

I did that, you'd think it was a locked water heater or other utility closet. And nobody is cutting the bolts on a locked safe that is bolted to the foundation, it'd have to be ripped out somehow.
The alarm.com systems have this, it's called "crash and smash" protection. Systems that don't have this will not send out a signal until after the delay between the alarm being triggered and the main alarm going off (code entry delay).
Many people make the mistake of getting cellular as a backup to the phone line, don't do this. If you go with a cellular only system the signal goes out much faster since the system doesn't have to dial out. And if the phone line is cut the system will try to redial about 15 times before switching to the cellular backup. The average burglary lasts 8-11 minutes and you want to make it as hard as possible to get at your valuables during that time so that they will either give up and leave, or get caught in the act.Oppressors can tyrannize only when they achieve a standing army, an enslaved press, and a disarmed populace. -- James Madison

Safes are only intended to buy time. Most gun safes only have an RSC rating, that means they're only guaranteed to last 5 minutes against an attack using basic hand tools. It's just another layer of security.

Its called PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY....He said when the burglars found out his safe might be at his friends house, two days later his friends house got broken into. Maybe it's just me, but I'd feel responsible if I was the OP and one of my friends had been affected like that. Especially if that friend had a family that could have been hurt.
Just because a friend is holding something for you and someone decides to break in to steal it doesnt make you responsible for the break in. The CRIMINALS are responsible for the break in. Sure I would try to compensate my friend for his loss but I wouldnt take full responsibility, and my friends wouldnt blame me either.
My friends trust me all the time to hold things for them, and I trust them as well. If someone broke into my house, or my friends house, to steal those items, it would be neither mine or my friends faults FOR THE ACTIONS OF A CRIMINAL.
So do you believe that we are all responsible for our own actions, or that people who commit crimes are forced to commit those crimes from some kind of unseen hand or force?A note to the NSA or anyone gathering information on me, this disclaimer is for you..."Everything I type on this website Is purely fictional and for entertainment purposes only. Also, sometimes I type in CAPS to emphasize a POINT. Please dont interpret that as YELLING. Sorry if I HURT any fuzzy little bunny's FEELINGS out there.Comment

Sorry to the op that just plain sucks ***, as for the alarm stuff I think most people must not realize that the "panel" is in side the house in a central location so if someone were to find it and smash it......that's right they would have to be in the house in witch case the alarm would all ready be going off! smashing the bell box outside does absolutely nothing and generally is installed with a tamper as well witch sets the alarm off as well. Of course an alarm of any kind is only good if it is set and has a monitoring system with service up to date. And as a couple others mentioned the wireless types generally have a loss of power or signal distress witch alerts your monitoring company as well.Comment

Leaving to costa rica in a couple weeks. Thanks for reminding me to anchor my safe.Comment

Read this, you'll be amazed at how wrong your misconceptions about most alarms are. Most of the big name home security systems can be defeated with this method. This is easily verified by arming your system, opening an entry door, and then unplugging the power to the control panel. You will receive no phone call from your alarm company and the police will not arrive. In fact if you check your alarm log (ADT has this) on your alarm companies website you will see that no alert was sent out.as for the alarm stuff I think most people must not realize that the "panel" is in side the house in a central location so if someone were to find it and smash it......that's right they would have to be in the house in witch case the alarm would all ready be going off! smashing the bell box outside does absolutely nothing and generally is installed with a tamper as well witch sets the alarm off as well.
