I don't see how it can get a signal from inside a large metal box (faraday cage) and an external antenna can simply be snapped off before tampering with the safe.

EDIT: Found the actual product page.

SafElert lets you remotely monitor your gun safe's status from your smartphone. SafElert alerts you to movement, vibration, door activity, temperature, and humidity.

The antenna is easily disabled, about the only thing I would consider this device usable for is monitoring the temperature/humidity levels.

Just piping in, this topic has been well covered in the accessories subforum over the years.

First to the OP: so sorry to hear of this happening to you, especially with such a full plate of going through a divorce. Some people out there are just filled with malice, and will kick anyone when they are down if it gets them something out of it.

Regarding the safes, in this case really what most everyone here is talking about is actually a RSC. Though you can certainly buy these gun safes to have a lot more metal and weight than other common ones seen, gun safes only offer a relative safety given the circumstances around the thief. It's already well covered about getting as secure in steel thickness safe with a good locking system as you can afford and bolting that down securely optimally into cement. Next, mere access to finding or physically manipulating around the safe is another factor people should consider, as it is important, and can really gum up a thief's efforts. Of course what people can't see or know about, is an extra layer of security.

Regarding the alarm systems, these are so important because all of this really is about access and time to these gun safes or other household items. Reducing the access and time to minutes for police response means everything.

I can't speak to some of the different alarm systems out there, but the traditional wired systems you see installed in businesses and have been done in homes by recognized companies will offer you one or multiple consoles, but the "main" control box, with its own UPS battery, is stashed away in a metal box. Now it is important to securely hide and make access difficult (if not impossible in any reasonable time) to that box, since an experienced thief knowing about the alarm and tripping it will be first on mission to find it to try to destroy it before the call out after the standard disarm delay (however long you want that).

That's not difficult to secure and make almost impossible for the thief to get at it in time, and of course even if they cut the phone line, cell response can be triggered. These triggers, amount of delays, and other points like fail-over counts, are customizable on a decent system. You can customize what kind of call out, how quickly, and how it handles it. So think that through if it matters.

One thing an alarm system also offers you is fire response. That also is important, and how you get your home insurance discount for having a monitored alarm system.

You had 20 guns stored in a box that could be moved by a hand truck? You routinely deal with individuals shady enough to steal said box, and they even know you owned guns? It seems odd to me that you could, "know," who stole your guns. How, exactly, do you, "know?"

The only people who know I own guns are my family and shooting buddies, and the guy breaking in at 2am.

When I had my house built I had the gun safe made as part of my house. No way anyone is getting in. It cannot be moved.

As an inspector, I find the main panel is usually in a closet near the front door. Thieves already know this. I'm amazed that a fake main panel isn't placed in that closet with an instant trigger if tampered with.

This would look a little suspicious!

Maybe it is just me, but based upon the OP's two original posts it seems the individual after his guns may have been his ex whom he is currently divorcing as she has been after the safe for about a year. Since they have mutual friends in common or possibly children together, it may not be so hard for her to get wind of the safes whereabouts hence why his buddy house was also broken into and his house was also hit while he was out of state.

As far as any alarm or safe, NO safe or alarm is ever a for sure thing, it just buys time and acts as a deterrent.

Sorry OP hope you get your guns back.

The safe was stolen in Modesto ca. The vehicle they used was a Ford SUV. Dark color. Most likely Ford Expedition. The plates were stolen. There was a large vinal decal in the back window. The police report only explains it as large, white and wavy.
There were three Hispanic males. The driver fat and tattooed. One other also large and tattooed. One was described as skinny.

You can't emagine the feeling when you get a phone call saying you door was kicked in and neighbors saw three guys coming out of your house with a hand truck with something that looked like a large box.
Neighbors got plate number and vehicle description. Plates were stolen.
Very hard not to confront the one you know is responsible.
In order to "know" you must have proof. If you have proof, an arrest must be in progress.

Oh... wait... did you mean the version of "know" that means "I have a hunch"? Well, hunches can and have been wrong. That's why we have the jury system.

Sorry for your loss, dude. You had them all locked up. It's no sense in calling out the bolting down, that's water under the bridge. Man I hope those scum get what they deserve. Good luck getting your guns back pardner.

These are some of the firearms taken. I'm still trying to find serial numbers on others.
Kimber TLE 1911. Had laser grips. K107615

                          Colt Phython .357. E41876 Blued.
(Again, there were two Phython's. Looking for serial number on second.)

                          My daughters guns:

                          I will post more soon.
Please keep an eye out. And pass it on. Thanks

ow some nice handguns there anything would have sucked but that sucks more.

Dont count on neighbors.. I repo houses one of the first things I do if I think a house is vacant is break in. Either through an open window / door 50% of the time, drill out the front door lock 20%, have a lock smith show up 20% and 10% I find the key close by the front door under something. Done this for 15 years had the cops called twice.
People see me all the time they just turn away, some do ask “whats up” but a 10-15 sec story and there on there way.
To top it off I trash out the houses so any property left I load up in a trailer etc.. like I said dont count on your neighbors for anything.

First off sorry to hear op!!!!

I was in aw to hear about other people's alarm systems....

With mine there is no phone line to cut, I don't even have a phone line, mine goes by cellular. It wouldn't matter if you took my panel off the wall, down the street and ran over and threw it in the river, once the alarm has been tripped you have 30 sec to enter code or if no code entered I get phone call, if I don't answers cops are on way! I can even enter the wrong code witch would shut off the alarm but let's the alarm company know to still send the cops. If I have a power outage, after I think 36-48 hrs it sends a signal ( I guess it's last umph of power) that we have lost power and will call me. Again if I don't answer the cops are called. If you cut my power, with in those 36-48 hours it continues working as if power was on...
Also comes with nifty car alarm type key pads I can arm/ disarm/ or panic button.
