All I gotta say is that it takes a lot of balls to stand up and say "Hey, I'm an f'n moron and just drilled a hole in a few walls, remember to stay safe kids."

    Kudos to you.
Alot isn't a word and allot isn't the word you think it is.

I'd really like a Colt 1903 frame, bad finish okay!
I'm also looking for a good deal on a 1911 frame or two for budget/spare parts builds.

As a side conversation to this incident...

Does this reinforce or debunk the 5.56/.223 Overpenetration argument?

If I remember right it was Federal made brown box M193 - 55gr FMJ. So far no bullet has been recovered and since most of the debris is in the bathtub and there is no metal fragments in it, and no indiciation that ANYTHING struck the opposite wall I am going to assuming it won't be found. The exit hole on the tile side of the wall is VERY small, measuring roughly .065" in diameter. The walls are the old style solid plaster but there IS a cavity between them. My thinking is if the bullet exited the wall with enough force to still be airborne it would have hit the opposite wall and caused some marking, if nothing else. I am thinking that while the hole MIGHT have closed back in on itself it's highly unlikely with it's contrsutrion so I am thinking the bullet impacted the rear side of the tile wall and the force of impact punch a small section out and the remaining bullet feel in the open space OR the jacket was shed in the initial entry through the door/first layer of the wall and impacted the tile at a much small diameter, at which point it hit the hard tile and fragmented violently into small pieces pushing out a fist sized portion of tile as it went.

              The bullet did NOT tumble.

As for penetration, I would feel confident that it couldn't penetrate more than two of the walls in this house. I'd still say it would be ill advised to be used as a inside the home type of defensive weapon.

Yep those plaster walls and tile did a good job of stopping the bullet. Drywall . . . not so much.

Neo, I'm glad to hear that no one was injured. As it was stated already, it takes a lot of balls to admit screwing up like this. Neo, I'm glad that you shared your experience and I hope that we all can take it as a learning lesson.

Here you go for the people wondering about over penetration.

This shows the exit hole AFTER I tested the bullet tip in it to see how deep the bullet would seat. This pushed the hole open to about twice its original size.

Here shows a picture of another 5.56 round placed in the hole. You will notice the bullet only goes about .090" deep and now the hole is roughly .130" in diamter. Keep in mind originally it was only about .065" in diameter before I pushed material in.

ETA: The second photo's perception is VERY deceiving. It looks like the bullet tip sticks in to almost midway up the cone but it is actually only seated in the very first bit. I would be surprised if the hollow point on some of the AE hollow points I've have in the past would even fit in the hole now, even after pushing it open more. I am measuring the tip of this 5.56 round and it is roughly .055"-.060" which means that the original hole was only about .005" larger than the TIP of the bullet, let alone any width behind the tip.

The real tragedy is the damage to your shower tiles. I have some just like that, except a different shade and I couldn't find any like it when I had to bust a few out to change the shower valve. Good luck on finding 40 year old tiles. Better go to Lowes or HD and buy a soap shelf or something to inset there and some spackle for the walls before your wife gets home.

p.s. the bullet is in the bottom of the wall.

Imagine if that was a working bathroom and the Mrs. was in there taking a shower. YIKES!!!

I will learn from your mistake. Thank God the consquences were not much more dire than a piece of tile.
