    1) when I pick up a gun, even if I "know" it's not loaded

    2) when someone hands me a gun

    3) when I hand someone a gun

    4) when I take my gun out of my safe

    5) when I put my gun in my safe

    Yyyuuuuup.

    In fact, check it twice.

      Thatz an awakening.

My dad and I had our Negligent Discharge last month. He has an older .357 mag that keeps sticking. It was loaded and he was trying to get the cylinder to turn to unjam/unload it when his finger slipped off the hammer. We were both leaned over the gun trying to figure out what was wrong. It was pointed in a 'safer' direction the whole time.

I didn't hear so much of the gunshot, more the rush of sound and pain as my hearing came back the next instant. I couldn't comprehend what had actually happened. The bullet hit a huge candle on a nearby table, went through the window in the entry way and hit an exterior wall next to the security door. The candle was half gone. Wax was everywhere, in almost every room of the house.

I ran outside to make sure the round hadn't made it out of the house, and he said something about the cops coming... yeah right! not in that neighborhood. We cleaned as best we could. I split before the stepmonster got home and wished my dad the best of luck, and if he needed, I'd have room for him to spend the night.

I still don't drop the hammer on a gun before putting it away. I just can't bring myself to close the action and squeeze the trigger. I just can't.

Just a side note question for you guys who build the OLL rifles. I do not own an OLL so I don't know. On your builds like this rifle with the permanently attached magazines, does the bolt lock back after the last round? Or do you disable that feature to make it easier to unhinge to reload?

The Magazine does not need to be permanently attached to the lower receiver.

When you build a rifle from parts you can install the hold open device or not its up to you.

          It does serve a purpose.

And in the past I have used a small stainless steel Allen head bolts to attach the device which makes it a lot easier to remove.

          Its a 2.5mm Allen bolt.

I know I'm a lot less likely to chamber a round in my house now. I might put a mag into a gun, but I'm not going to work the action unless I'm really sure I'm going to need a firearm (which hasn't happened).

If your bolt locks back on a P50 or SAS Mag-Lock or similarly equipped AR, you just hit the bolt release button before you open the rifle. IMO, having the bolt lock back is a better way of reminding yourself that the rifle is empty than hearing "click." That click could be a hang-fire, a slow primer. If you open a bolt on one of those at the wrong time...

Are you going to find the bullet?

Glue that and the casing to a little plaque and set in your desk. You know, just as a reminder.

If a .223 is loud, makes me wonder how a 12g or .357 would do to my ears in a house.

Wouldn't want to know. Had a .45 go off as my ear muffs fell off one ear. The ringing was pretty intense but fleeting. Someone shot a .308 on a 'cold range' at Burro during a arfcom shoot. It wasn't the persons fault, the designated RO called a cold range in the middle of his mag and he hadn't heard because he had two sets of ear protection on. I took my ear protection off to talk to someone and the round went off about 5 feet to my left. It was jarring enough to shake my vision. The 5.56 in the house was just...wow. I can't imagine something larger or louder in that confined of a space.

How many of us are going to keep hearing protection next to our SHTF gun? When cops show up to a shooting, can they even communicate with the shooter? How long until we're required to show proof of hearing protection ownership when we pick up a new firearm?

We shot a 12gauge out in the desert without hearing protection. The longer barrels seem to direct the sound away from us. I didn't find it uncomfortable at all.

Classic!, too dang funny...since nobody was hurt. I can point and giggle because I have done it too!. Cleaning my Tokarev 9MM, I had just reassembled it and was working the action and releasing the slide many times....kinda goofing off to say the least late one night while watching TV. At some point I put the magazine in, let the slide slam forward....and ...then ....pulled ...the trigger..BANG!!!!!!. I had the pistol pointing straight up. I could see the hole in the ceiling. I quickly turned off the TV and lights and waited fot the round to hit close by......then waitied for any sirens.....15 min go by. Then I walked around the block to ensure nobody was screaming or laid out on the sidewalk. All was well. I stopped goofing off with firearms while watching TV with ammo in the same room. What a dingbat. You do not bow your head in shame alone.
                        You talking to me?

sounds kinda like what happened to me recently. i was loading match rounds for my wifes 308 which was sitting on top of the entertainment center in the living room of our appartment. i made one about .1 longer than the prior. i dropped it in the chamber and closed the bolt and it went off. the rifle was right about eye level and perpendicular to me and the muzzle was over my head ( over 6ft up) and facing slightly upward. scared the wife and i both alot. we were lucky no one was around outside. it stopped in a wall about 30ft or less from the muzzle. scarey stuff accidental discharges.

I think the noise is mostly related to the bullet's velocity. If you've heard the Open shooters with their major 9's at an IPSC match, you know what I mean. I can't explain the physics of it though

I can shoot 12 guage and .22LR without eyes and ears... anything else and I need them.

I know you have been drilled on this but I seem to remember the bolt locking back with an empty magazine inserted....

Just be glad your wife was not taking a shower.

Next be glad the cops were not called.
