Anyone else that can't stand shooting ranges?

I think if we all had the oppurtunity to shoot from our property we would instead. For me, Im 15 minutes from Angeles Range which I don't mind. Compared to the closest blm land which is like 30-40 min away. With gas being 4.09. I think ill take Angeles range.

Some of us live you know around a large base of people - No choice unless we want to drive 3 hours or so to BLM -

I go to ranges all the time since I live about 20 minutes from an indoor range so it is far easier than traveling 1 1/2 to 2 hours to BLM land or any of the outdoor ranges.

Also... heck, I like showing off!!
It's rare I see anyone at an indoor range that can shot worth a darn. Most folks are struggling to keep all their rounds on target @ 7 to 10 yards. It's also why I like going on weekends.

But when I actually need to practice, nothing beats BLM with no one else around.

It seems like most people here go to a shooting range instead of going to national forest or BLM land to shoot. I've been to a range probably only 3 times since I've started shooting and I honestly can't stand it. I hate being able to only shoot paper at most places and I hate having to wait to go change targets. I just generally dislike the atmosphere.

I'd rather take the $10-20 it cost at a range and put it in my tank to drive an extra 45 minutes to NF forest land where I can find a spot away from other people and do my own thing. Anyone else here dislike ranges?

I completely agree.

Another reason is having range-nazis that don't understand the law, but scream at you about your 'evil black rifle' anyways.

I like to shoot away from everyone, but it is much more convenient for me to drive 15 minutes to the Lincoln Rifle Club and know that the RO is going to be watching my back when downrange. No hassles from a Forest Ranger type, game wardens, or people who may or may not be friendly.

It's all about time, cost of gas and safety, but yes, I prefer the wide open spaces, but the last time was up in S. Idaho a year ago.

I was clueless as to where my handguns went (Was turned around for maybe 3-4 seconds) and then noticed a random guy with my guns..

unfortunately, the closest range to me is the Brea indoor range -- which is the only place I go

I would love to drive out to some BLM land but don't know where to go. Any ideas?

Unfortunately I live in a suburban area that's quite far from any BLM land, so it's easier for me to go to my local shooting range. Convenience aside, I believe it's important that we support our local shooting facilities so that they can continue to operate and thrive as neighborhood institutions/businesses, they provide a valuable service for those of us living in more densely populated areas so we are able to have a place to shoot. Personally I've never had a real negative experience at public ranges, RSO and Staff are generally friendly and courteous, but it's important that you follow the rules that each individual range have put forth (their house, their rules). That's just my .02 cents.

Whoa! touching someone else's gun without permission!? That's a big no no! Same goes for firearms too!

Anyway, for some people, driving out to BLM land is definitely not an option, as much as I would love to do it, I just can't. For one, I don't know where the hell it is, and believe you me, I've been scouring the internet looking for a decent map describing where to shoot only to come up with crap, I've since given up. Secondly, I live well within city limits, so it'll actually take quite a while to even go to where I assume BLM land might be, so unless I camp out for a few days, it wouldn't be cost effective. Thirdly, my Honda Civic isn't exactly what you would call all terrain, as in it's not an all terrain vehicle, and I assume that one would have to go off roading for at least some period of time. Finally, 4 dollar something a gallon for gas!? No thanks...

Let's recap:

-Too far away
-Wrong vehicle for off roading

I dont mind shooting ranges but shooting paper and only being able to shoot straight ahead without moving gets boring.

I dont see my people have an issue with the people there, every time I go I mind my own business and the most communication I have is someone asking to have my brass.

I enjoy shooting at ASR. Paper is fine for a while, but hey have steel out to 600 yrds. Driving 3 hours out to BLM for a Sunday shoot isn't very realistic. Also having to pack up the car with steel targets, food, tables etc isn't something that I would want to do every other weekend.

Get a private range with some friends. Problem solved.

I would prefer informal shooting on private or BLM land but that's not easily available to everyone. I use public ranges out of necessity, not preference.

Necessity. Not all of us can be so spoiled as to live $10 in gas (at 25 MPG) to public access land.

Weirdos bother me 5% of the time I get bothered, which is infrequent. The other 95% it's the crowding. I can't stand crowded ranges.

^ If I had my way I would never shoot at public ranges, but the 5 hour round trip sucks.
