That's good to know, and is very encouraging. But I don't know any specific locations/directions. The only thing I can think of is near Barstow or Victorville, both of which are several hours away in driving time and distance. I've heard of Raahauges also (not sure if that's spelled right).

Naw screw that. Call the BLM Palm springs office and tell them you want to shoot at Steele Peak and ask for directions (its off the cajalco exit on the 15 south, right after the 91. I dont shoot right at that spot, but close to it. Their are also some private ranges, Maywood and Rockpile, near by.
Once you get out there, you'll figure it out.Comment

I agree and disagree.
Don't get me wrong. I love being out in the wild on BLM land doing my own thing with no worries and very limited restrictions.
But I go to a pretty nice well control outdoor range that can be fun too. While only shooting at paper and being limited to only 1 shot every three seconds can get old, having a nice clean bench, not having to guesstimate target distance, or having to setup tables and chairs is nice sometimes too.
I think it all depends on the range you go to.Signature requiredComment

I'm in the same boat as Blackdog, the cost of gas to drive to BLM I can buy a 200rd pack 308 and drive 15min to the range where i meet all these nice people with the same hobby as mine. Also there is a hot dog stand ,walking distance with nice cold soda .LOL
We all want to be close to a BLM site , Somebody in SAC. decided to close all the site near by, somebody still remember TEXAS CNY. Those were the good old days.( 30rd mag five guys in a row 10cents a rd for 223)LOLComment
