Trunk Gun Poll

My car broke down once in a bad area of my county... the area along the highway known for gang activity, meth labs, dumping bodies, you name it, happened to be first off ramp I could get to. I was lucky enough to have a pistol in my trunk from shooting that day. It appeared that I was not in a prohibited area so I UOC'd while I waited for my buddy arrived and we got the car limping along to the repair shop.
Kept a trunk gun ever since.
I'm in college so I park off campus. Had a girlfriend that worked in a 'gun free zone' so I parked off the lot when I visited. It takes some thought and planning sometimes. But I'd rather be armed... or have the ability to be so in short order.

I'm just surprised that with everyone wanting CCW and carry rights more people don't avail themselves of this method.....after all, a great percentage of our time away from home and work is spent in the car.....Comment

i am still waiting on the experts to chime in on the legalities of a trunk gun. if there is indeed a legal way to keep a trunk gun then i would seriously consider doing it, but i need to know the legalities beforehand.Comment

Legalities? It's totally legal. What else is there to know? Someone here can probably quote the PC....Comment

To further expand...a long gun may be carried inside a vehicle, unlocked, and unloaded with full magazines right beside it. A hangun must be unloaded and either locked in a container, or the trunk counts as a container. It must not be in the utility compartment or glove box.
My understanding is that passing through a school zone, the guns have to be locked up, and the trunk satisfies this requirement.
Really, what else is there????Comment

+1
I believe long guns are OK and I thought handguns are like you said above. You can't have a handgun in your vehicle "all the time" for "just in case", can you?

Traveling with Firearms in California
HANDGUNS
California Penal Code section 12025 does not prevent a citizen of the United States over 18 years of age who is not lawfully prohibited from firearm possession, and who resides or is temporarily in California, from transporting by motor vehicle any pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person provided the firearm is unloaded and stored in a locked container.
The term "locked container" means a secure container which is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment. For more information, refer to California Penal Code Section 12026.1.Comment
