I'm curious how the paperwork process goes. When you send in your CLEO notification, what happens? Do they just file it away? Enter the firearm info into AFS? etc

I'm going to file a form 1 for an 80% AOW build and I wonder if they would register it with the state too.

Doing an 80% AOW, you are navigating a slightly different path than what Damiiaaannn or I did. Have you read this thread yet?

If a Person does all the proper paper work first can the owner of the firearm make the modifications to the firearm them selves if they had the ability. Or must it be out sourced .

You can do it yourself but you can't do anything at all until ATF approval and you get your stamp. Some things you'll probably have to farm out, like engraving the weapon with the required information.

And technically, if doing it yourself, you should not own/possess the short barrel with the firearm, until after you obtain BATFE approval. Otherwise, you could be charged with constructive possession of SBR/SBS while you are waiting on BATFE approval.

                1. Acquire host firearm (Title 1 Other).
                2. Submit Form 1 to make a Title 2 AOW.
                3. Wait for BATFE approval.
                4. After receiving BATFE approval, acquire short barrel and make host firearm into a Title 2 AOW (also includes engraving your info onto the Title 2 AOW).

Yeah, I think that's covered by "anything at all" I put in my post.

Still, it's just a lot easier to buy one that's already made, and you pay only $5 tax. If you make it yourself, you pay $200.

$780 for this one, and you still have an asset worth something compared to a homemade one if you ever want to sell.

See Damiiaaannn's post below, there's still additional costs involved.

Lol finger prints and ink card are not $50. ATF will ship them to you for free and you can use a $5 ink pad from any art supply store and roll your own.

Cost in CA for transferring an AOW is going to be Tax, Shipping, and FFL fee for transferring an NFA item. Form 1 would be cheaper in the end. If a dealer isn't overcharging the cost of an instock AOW, I bet the going rate for NFA transfer is ~$100. After tax, dros fee, and nfa fee that's $200 on top of the AOW cost.

Engravings can be found for $35-$50 or do it yourself ****ty with an electro pencil

Question would be building one is ok but I read on another thread DOJ is getting forms denied on buying AOWS. Is it possible to buy say a shockwave or a tac-14?

If I recall they were only denying the Taurus Judge/S&W Governor AOW's. I'm not sure if that's still happening though.

No, but you could file a Form 1 and make something very similar. It would just need a slightly shorter barrel to make the OAL <26"
