-Buy an 870/500 that's a pistol grip only firearm, it can not have a stock on it or ever have had a stock on it.
-Fill out the Form 1, you'll need to send in passport pictures and fingerprint ink cards too. One copy is sent to your local police chief, sheriff, district attorney, etc. Their approval is not needed, you just have to notify them. You'll also pay the $200 then.
-5-6 months later you'll get your stamp back
-Engrave your receiver with your name, city and state
-Send your barrel and magtube to a company for the conversion
      -Put the parts back together.

Or you can buy one using a Form 4 from an FFL but it’ll take longer and cost more.

Thanks OP for the instructions. Do you still need a trust for this?

No trust needed, you can file as an individual

In retrospect I suggest trust over individual. Makes transfer upon death easier. I'm getting older every day ...

Trusts are taking much longer, I've heard the wait for an individual Form 1 is about 4 months right now.

Doubt it costs much more. $5 stamp.

It may only costs a $5 stamp but the gun itself is exponentially higher in costs..

I spent under $900 for everything including the 870, $200 Tax stamp, fingerprint cards, passport photos, conversion work, and engraving.

If you buy one using a Form 4, its going to cost closer to $1500 all said and done.
