This never comes up in the discussion:

Your travelling to or from the range with you unregistered AW, or you just like having it in your trunk.

You get into a wreck and have to go to the hospital. Cops impound your vehicle and looky what we have here!

Yep, that's my territory. Out in the desert. I carry copies of my papers and also a copy of this web page:

        The key paragraph being:

"Persons have permission of the BLM to possess and use firearms on BLM-administered public lands, including lawfully registered assault weapons, except when prohibited by other applicable laws and regulations."

I admit though, I don't know where those other applicable laws would be published. Semantically, this statement makes no distinction between RAWs and any other kind of firearm, which is a good thing.

          TL; DR (sorta skimmed it)

The answer to the OPs question is: They won't. At least not until you get caught (as you pointed out initially). If you never get caught, they will never know about it until you are gone.

The thing to think about is this: What good is that unused AR-15 sitting in your safe/closet/basement/super duper secret hiding spot doing if you can't take it out and shoot it every so often. If it's mere existence in your life is fulfilling to you, then it's no big deal. If you want more from your weapons, then it becomes silly after a while. It all depends on you.

I won't even risk featureless. I don't expect your typical patrolman to be up to date on what is legal and what isn't. Besides, don't they usually arrest first and ask questions later? I am not going to the klink, but I'm not registering so I guess regular firearms use will be a thing of the past for me until the SHTF...

They can check themselves via the terminal in the cruiser or by radioing it in.
It shows up any time they run you for anything. If they pull you over or there's a call to your house, etc "dangerous weapon" owner pops up without them having to specifically query. So any time you have to deal with a cop you can figure they're on edge.

When the first registration period ended (1990?) there was almost no compliance for years. So the govt threatened, ran tv commercials, etc and eventually had another registration period with "amnesty" for those that didn't register the first time. There are probably a lot of unregistered guns out there. If people are not fairly activist about their gun ownership, how are they going to know? If there was a specific type of toaster that was banned and you have one, how are you supposed to know? To the average person the idea seems absurd.

Wow. I guess all that went sailing right over my head. I registered mine in '89-90 and never gave it a second thought---after the initial feelings of paranoia and persecution abated. But for years I never paid attention to who else may or may have registered. Truth be told, I really wasn't much into shooting back then, even though I owned the rifles. I was pretty much just a surfer and mtn biker in the '90s.

A friend and I had to explain featureless to a BLM ranger once, and he accepted the explanation (compared them to a Mini14 I think). We couldn't convince him it was legal to use >10rd magazines (he admitted they were old, said he couldn't tell they weren't Vietnam era) in them, but we weren't using them when he approached. We decided to keep them put away for the rest of the day just in case.

So ive been thinking about how they would exactly know if i dont register it and i leave the "evil" features on it and have a regulaf mag release? I know if anything ever happened and they looked into the gun i would be f*cked but say im at the range and a cop sees my gun i can just say its registered and he would have no way of knowing right? Or you guys think this is still in the gray area and have to wait till the laws take effect?
The way things are going, your registration number will be branded onto your arm.

Pretty much this, but expect to be pistol whipped, thrown to the ground and bloodied before you end up in prison. At least I think that's the "intent" of the law that the authors envisioned.

It might be easier if we were all just tattooed. They could just scan us to keep track or something. It'd be way easier to enforce that we have no children and stuff like that, you know, since we have guns and are deadly mass murderers just waiting for something to set us off.

You better start getting use to getting a permit to possess a firearm in your home, like NY city does. Long process.
