I will stick with a remington 870 for home defense. They are better made, better balanced, and more reliable in a tactical situation.
I was at Coldwar shooters with my GF buying mags for my AR15 and fondled one. Didnt do it for me. I found out long ago A shotgun isnt as fun as a rifle. To me Its a hunting/HD tool so I can only hold 3 rounds for hunting (most of its use). As for HD, 5 rounds with the shorty barrel is fine. I carry my 870 in my trunk on roadtrips cuz it's "only a shotgun for hunting jackrabbits officer"

Reading some of the comments I came up with people who fall into these categories.

              1. Want want but can't afford it.
              2. Can't afford one and resort to dislike or even hate it because it's to expensive (envy)
              3. Dislike or Hate anything Russian made and think if it's not Western made then it's crap, they feel superior shooting AR's, H&K's, Sigs, Benelli's etc. They belive anything Russian made is inferior and shooting western guns makes them better.
              4. Being dishonest (making up stuff because of one or combination of ^).
              5. Honestly have no need for one.

I've shot one and want to get it as soon as I can find it locally.

I had quite a few shotguns over the years, no pump or semi-auto made me want a shotgun more then this particular one.

This is my current one, will sell it once I get Saiga 12.

              This is what I want.

                I do want one...

what turns me off is all the Kalifornia restrictions on magazine capacity, stock/grip configurations, etc...

IMHO S12 would make a great tactical/HD/SHTF SG.

                BUT...
If you're restricted to a max 10 round fixed magazine...to me that negates alot of the advantages of the S12, since with many other autoloaders with a mag extension you're already looking at 6+1, 7+1, or even 8+1.

If a 20 round detachable drum were legal and available in Kali I would definitely get a S12

BTW anyone know if Benelli M3s are legal here? And how much? I like the option of the convertible shotguns, and I don't suppose I can afford or even find SPAS-12.

I'm not sure why this turned into a Saiga-12 bashing thread. Everyone keeps bringing up home defense or "tactical situations." If you only own guns for those reasons that is a shame. No one can deny the gun is fun to shoot. If the one you shot that one time wasn't functioning correctly that doesn't mean they all suck. Mine functions perfectly and I would be happy to let any of the non-believers empty a mag or two so they can see the light.

You can reload with mag lock much faster then feed a 8 rounds into a tube mag.
It's easier to carry shells in magazines then in any other form, including mounted on a shotgun. You can even sort ammo per magazine (buckshot, slugs etc)
If or when SHTF (depends on scenario) mag lock can be taken off in a minute as I'm pretty sure at that point there will be other priority's then enforcing stupid idiotic laws.

I completely agree with you re:detachable magazines...which is why I spent a good deal of $ buying SideWinder kit Mossberg 500.

Anyway...despite the legal restrictions S12 is still more firepower than most other shotguns...do plan to get one in the near future hopefully.
Saiga's not cheap...but compared to a Benelli...I gotta say S12 has got great value. Then again Moss 930 isin't bad either...

If I could get one thats select fire, with a barrel that just barely sticks out of the handguard legally, I would.

The maglock and long barrel makes me not want it.

this holds true for my ARs and AKs, but I still have them

I think of my Saiga 12 as a fun gun, it is converted but I didnt put a rail or a window breaker on it. I bought it to have a semi auto shotgun that's cheap and fun to shoot.

The mag lock, for me, is a non issue. I go into Arizona and Nevada a lot, and when I travel there, I could easily remove it. Also, with McDonald v. Chicago on the horizon, assuming it comes down on our side, I think there's a good chance that, within the next 5 years or so, we may see a lot of these unconstitutional CA gun laws being repealed (including the ban shotguns that have the ability to accept detachable mags).

                              Do you own ANY guns?

I ask because the restrictions you listed turn you off from buying a Saiga, but if you have any

                              1. semi-auto rifles or shotguns
                              2. mag-locked firearms
                              3. Title 1 firearms

then there seems to be a disconnect in logic.
