Default My Rust Blue experience: M70B1/AB2 FINISHED PIC 02.02

All Photos: Yugo M70 Rust Blue

I started out with this matching numbers kit, dirt cheap and I had the option of a fixed stock that was pictured with the kit or the separately pictured underfolder. I didn't bother to ask if it was a B1 or AB2 marked trunnion. The kit came to me and I saw the trunnion was marked B1; next thought: oh man, this is going to catch me some flak, who cares anyway.

Some background on the kit: It was naval jellied by one of the previous owners. Thats why it looks like that, bare and sad.

I decided I'd go with the rust blue process since I'm unemployed and I have lots of time. Thanks to VALMET_M76 at AK FILES http://www.akfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31594
I am bluing the carrier just to see how much it would take, I'll probably end up polishing it back to the chrome finish later.

I bought some B1 wood for it
http://www.theakforum.net/phpBB3/vie...?f=27&t=139251
and a US made M70 grip from Ronin to help me with my 922(r) count
http://www.akfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75123

I will be showing my progress with the rust bluing in this thread.
I didn't blast the parts off, just went over everything I could with a brush.

Feel free to share your thoughts!

Here's the kit:

I let the parts sit for at least 24 hours, then boiled for at least 30 minutes.

The beginning. Round 1 - First Coat, First Boil, First Carding
(I left some original finish on some parts and rust blued over them - Trigger guard, top cover, gas tube, stock)

1 hr later

Top Cover was absent

The FSB AND RSB are not taking the bluing as well as the other parts

Gas tube went hiding

back to the box

Round 5 - 5 coats, 5 boils and 5 cardings

I put on a heavier coat of rust blue and let it rust about 40 hours...

Some parts are still uneven, instructions say they will blend with more coatings.

After 5 coats, 5 boils and 5 cardings I am going to stop bluing the carrier, it looks really dark but it isn't taking too well. Here it is with a coat of CLP. I will end up polishing this part later.

More pics after Round 5
Here's the M70B1 proofing, fugged that rivet up and really don't care, knew it wasn't going to come out perfect. IT IS CALLED CHARACTER! yeaaa!

You can see that the top cover is actually coming out really nice!

Round 8 - 8 coats, 8 boils and 8 cardings

My girlfriend read my thread and she said she liked what I was doing and it looked great so I asked her if she would help me out and I explained the Rust Blue Process and she helped me with round 8.
I guess I'm lucky because she was excited to help me.

Update on the parts:
The RSB and FSB are both getting darker, lights spots are evening out and everything looks to be one shade except the rivets. I think it might be from my super carding strength.
I washed the UF parts that I have not applied any bluing to and placed them next to my blued parts to compare the factory worn down bluing to what I have now. The rust blue is actually very close to the worn down parts. I thought the parts were actually a lot darker but it was all the oil and grease left on it from the time when it was a gun. I have added these parts in and I hope they will come out even closer to what I have done.

LAST CYCLE BEGINS!

That's how much rust blue was left after 10 cycles and spilling some. I soaked up whatever I spilled onto cotton balls and put those in a zip bag and ended up using them in the 2nd-4th cycles.

I am in awe!

Yeah, it already looks good. Are you really going to repeat it all 10 times? Get out there and shoot it already!

That's a very nice build. Where did you get your kit?

Fantastic!

I'm really pleased to see the renewed interest in rust bluing, it makes me want to give it a try.

Thanks for all the feedback gents!

Now that Christmas weekend has passed I can get back to the huffing and brushing. I'm half way through and I hope this thing gets darker.

Anyone looking for a bottle of Rust Blue, PM JamesY

Yea it's about 2.5 hours to boil, brush and recoat. LOL
I'm used AK builder rivets and the RSB seems to be just as resistant.

Happy New Year all!!!

I have round 7 pics coming, once I find my other SD card...
I added the underfolder parts and two more cycles and I will be ready to press the barrel back in!

I noticed my leaf sight was a little beat up but replacement will only be necessary if it does horribly at the range. I also need to re-do the glow paint on the front sight. Still have to order a g2 FCG, slant brake and magazine lock and she'll be whole again.

Ready for a healthy coat of CLP !!
This set is going to soak while I spend the rest of the week in LA.

I am pleased with how this turned out...
36+ hours of work (coat + boil + carding)
Went through hella gloves, Dremel 442 bits to help me with the carding in the tight spaces, lots of PG&E gas and Sunnyvale water went to heating the tank.
Nearly killed a bottle of Rust Blue, some stolen cotton balls, an Amazon.com box, some brown wrapping paper and CLP!

After the CLP coat, I made sure my magazine release, front night sight, rear sight, lhg retainer lever and grenade sight had full movement.
Everything looks good to me!
I'll be pressing in the barrel next week.
