If you already have a gun you can add some height to the stock so you don't have to cover the bird.
The OP didn't have an existing gun so it is easier in my opinion to go from a trap gun to a field gun than a field gun to a trap gun.
All he would need to do is to lower the stocks comb.
Always easier to remove wood than to add it.Lynn Dragoman, Jr.

You can add cheek risers to a field stock too.
My trap gun (Beretta 682 gold X-Trap) shoots flat. But then I'm more interested in my field proficiency than 499 of 500. I'd rather have my sight picture be representative of what I'll see in the field with my field guns. And while trap mimicks the classic book pheasant flush, pheasants often don't read the book.Palestine is a fake country

You can even buy another stock - of course all at a price
And I do understand that most people prefer a flat shooting shotgun
Especially if shooters hunt like you mention
Nothing wrong with that

The biggest problem with teaching someone how to be a successful trapshooter is eliminating all the bad habits they have acquired while using a field gun hunting.
KingAir isn't a hunter so he doesn't have any bad habits yet and with a little bit of coaching he should learn pretty quickly.
I read all the time where people suggest you start shooting with a 22 long rifle to learn the wind or a 308 for 1000 yards.
I don't agree with either of those ways of thinking.
To my way of thinking if you want to race motorcycles get a motorcycle and leave the mountain bike at home.
That's the reason beginners are always buying a new gun so quickly.
They soon discover you need a gold pan to get gold and while a spaghetti strainer might look similar it isn't going to work.
That said if you have a shotgun by all means start shooting and you will quickly see what your needs are and you can make a better decision on what to purchase.Lynn Dragoman, Jr.
