    Trap starter shotgun

I was just having a conversation with another Calguns member and here is the question

What is a trap starter / budget shotgun that would do the trick to get going ?

I noticed the pump shotguns like :

    Winchester SXP Trap

    Remington 870

Will this actually do the trick - for a while ?

    Looking for advice !

The Beretta A300. It will cook you dinner after you're done shooting. Just kidding.

Will do the trick just fine --- for a long time

Get field stocks, a 28" barrel and choke tubes and your good to go

If you are anywhere near Triple B shooting range , take the Skeet clinic that is posted on the top of the shotgun page to learn the basics. If your not, get to your local Trap range let the Grey Hairs know that you are just starting and need some guidance.....the Grey Hairs will teach you

        Have fun

What ever you do, buy a quality shotgun. A good shotgun will last a lifetime, don't go cheap.

It's just to get me going
Got a club about 30 minutes out but they don't rent shotguns
So I rather get a starter and see how I like it
The rest will follow . . . and perhaps pretty fast !

Here you go. This is the cheapest starter trap gun, a quality shotgun. I own one along with some other higher end guns. This one is decent enough that it's not a waste of money.

Before I bought this I looked at the Winchester SXP trap gun but the Browning is just solid when compared to it plus a tad heavier. Years ago I had a Mossberg 500 Trap gun with a high Simmons rib, shot my first 25 straight from 22 yards with it. When they closed San Diego Shotgun Sports range I sold it was hoping to get back into trap at SBRG but now have to wear glasses to correct a bad left eye that doesn't focus on the same plane as the right eye.

I recently purchased a Franchi Affinity and have been using it for sporting clays. Have been using it the last two months and its been flawless, I highly recommended it

i have the sxp field with came with the 28" barrel. great pump action (i sometimes leave my hand loose on the pump and let the recoil pump the action for me) but unless the trap version increased the weight of the gun, it is, for me too light. i kept jerking my swing as i kept over swinging it. i'm sure being a noob at trap doesn't help either.

i then moved to the a300 and it is a heavier and due to it being semi-auto, much softer shooting too.

one thing to note, if you do go for a semi-auto, better get a shell catcher to prevent the old guys with the high end shotguns from getting mad at you. the a300 and im sure other semi-autos chuck those empty shells onto the person on your right.

870 is a good cheap way to start. Mine was my first gun as a present from my pops. Never sell this thing

Mossberg has the combos in the 500, it comes with 18" and 24/28" barrels. This is still relatively cheap and you can keep it and use it as home defense shotgun when you decided to upgrade.
