I have to agree, Marlin produces the same junk.

I had an old 20ga 11-48 that ran flawless for as long as I owned it. I now have an 1100 and 870 Wingmaster, both made in the mid 80's and both run flawless. I call them my matching pair because the wood and metal look so much alike.

Two things amaze me about this topic.

1. The people who deny there is a problem because they have not personally seen it.

2. The ridiculously retarded advice to use steel wool to polish the chamber.

The problem is real. It comes up all the freaking time. And, polishing the chamber does not work.

People who earn their living selling the big fat turd that is the 870 will deny and insult. What else would you expect?

Get a Mossberg, get a Nova, get a Supernova. Get anything but a recent production 870.

Its not the chamber. You need to take the machine marks off of the barrel tang. Its the portion that sticks out off of the chamber with the notch for the locking lug. I have a new 870 that runs great and eats any ammo. I had the same issue with it jamming and not extracting the shells. A few minutes with a small abrasive wheel on a dremel and its all good. I don't know why people think this is such a big deal? If its really a big deal for you to do just call Remington and they will send you a new barrel. I love my new 870 pump. Plenty of vids online if you need someone to show you how to do it. Google is your friend.

So, don't listen to people that know. Listen to someone that has one or two of them.

Since there are so many experts on the old and new 870 I challenge you to name the parts that are changed, the machines that make the parts that have changed or to even give the correct name of those parts. Name any changes to this gun over the last 60 years. People spout "Buy an Older 870" and they have no knowledge of the subject. The facts are it is the same 870 since day one except for a couple minor changes, which of course all you experts know of. So the 870 made today is in fact better then the 870 of old because of those changes. So you guys are what I like to call, wrong.

The same machines, the same materials and just about the same people have been making this gun for ever. It is a major employer in the Utica area and there are employees there with 40 years in. There are fathers, mothers, sons and daughters working on the same lines.

Also, for you guys that are so against Remington and are using a Mossberg 500. Do you even know that you are using a Remington designed Shotgun that was discontinued by Remington in 1950 in favor of the 870?

The lack of knowledge about this gun on this particular forum is not as high as other forums but is still astounding. The saving grace is there are members here that know this weapon inside and out and they seldom comment on these type of post but they will jump in when someone is having a real issue and give sound advice.

As for current Quality Control at Remington. It is no better or worse then all the others that any of you can name. If these is any improvement needed in Ilion it is that the new owners "Freedom Group" need to stay at least 100 miles from the factory and let those people do what they have doing the way they have been doing it for decades.

P.S. I tried removing metal from the machine marks on the barrel tang. That didn't work either. I had 4 870s and one Wingmaster. They all had to be mortared from 1-10 times per box of shells. I know how to analyze problems. I am a design engineer.

Sell it. Tell others. Get a different shotgun. It is not your job to finish Remingtons last manufacturing step on your shotgun.

Remington as a whole has lost their ways since freedom group stepped in. I can't bring myself to buy another Remington until their QC process is revamped.
With that being said I outgrew my 870 a few years back and wanted to go semi auto for the ease of just pulling the trigger. Looked at a lot of different guns and like the response said, you need to check out the Weatherby SA08. The gun is a Turkish import under Weatherby buy don't let that fool you, the gun runs, period. Very smooth trigger and action. We'll balanced, points and shoulders very easily. In a synthetic stock it tips the scales at a bit over 7 lbs too, very handy. The finish is very nicely done and tough as well. I've used mine a paddle, a crutch to get unstuck in the mud and it's been dropped in the crud and swamp too. A little wipe down and it had never failed me.

well, I emailed davidsons about this issue and have yet to hear back from them. I'm going to give them a call tomorrow during my lunch.

I understand things happen, but once and now twice? that's unacceptable. on an old gun , I would expect problems but new ones.. that's just ridiculous.

I'm looking into an A300 for the replacement. and an m2 for the house.

Polishing the chamber doesn't work. I had mine done professionally by a gunsmith more than once. Don't listen to people who make money off a certain brand of shotgun.

I don't make money from any shotgun, I make my living off of radar systems...So, don't listen to me either!
A tale of 2 870's.
1st was my sons, it had a problem with sticking shells on occasion. Polishing the chamber with a small cylinder hone and light machine oil fixed it...It's been flawless since.
2nd is my 870, it had a serious issue extracting shells from the chamber. Polishing the chamber made no difference. What turned out to be the problem was the firing pin retaining pin. It protruded past the surface of the bolt causing it to hang up on the slide assembly. I removed the retaining pin, shortened it by .050" and reinstalled...The gun has run flawlessly since!
Polishing the chamber may, or may not fix your issue. The issue is probably very easy to fix, yet it might be a little difficult to identify.

I have five 870s (currently). Never had a lick of trouble with any of them.

I have an 80's Remington 870P which has been flawless.
I have two friends that have purchased Freedom Group 870s and they both have extraction problems. One has had the front sight fall off from just the recoil forces. I can no longer recommend a Remington (or a Marlin) as long as Freedom Group controls them. Buy a Mossberg.

There are a million arguments online about 500/590 vs 870. I did my research and found people complaining about failure to eject on recent 870s. Watched it happen in a YouTube video. The guy was not limp-wristing. So I got a 500. If I have a regret, it's that I didn't get a semi-auto, but the gun itself is great. If it doesn't eject on the first try, it's because I'm limp-wristing 3" ammo and haven't cleaned it recently.

I give no care for the brand of guns. Not one bit. Cheap or expensive, pretty or ugly, I just want it to work.

I'm with you on that. You guys know way more about Shotguns than I do but all can say is I love my Mossberg 590A1. Bought 5 yrs ago for HD and only SG I have other than my Beretta trap SG (plan on getting another Mossberg just to have). Have run the 590 as hard as I could over the years and never an issue.

Understand though how some like other brands more, to each their own.
