Good choice! The Marlin 795 has been much more accurate then a 10/22 for me.

Thank you. I did read that the heavier barrel on the 795 is more accurate.

I'm not going for precision, but it is comforting to know the rifle is capable.

I'm not sure. But for the price, it would be worth it to check it out. I know when I lived in anti gun Chicago, I bought a Browning .22 from Gander Mountain in Wisconsin, and they shipped it to a FFL in Illinois for me. I don't see why Cabala's wouldn't do the same.

They could but then your FFL in CA is going to slap you with an out of state transfer fee that would kill any savings...

I just got my 795SS out of jail tonight. One thing i noticed the other day when i bought it was i got a gun with metal sling swivel studs. The gun shop had 3 SS models in stock. The display model had molded swivel studs. The employee wanted to get me a new in box gun, which i appreciated of course. The first one from the back had some etching on the barrel and i had them grab another from the back. The last one had the metal swivel studs. I assume it is an old new stock situation. Is there any way to check the build date with the serial number? I couldn't find anything on Marlin's site or Google, but i probably missed it. Anyway, this thread was a huge help and convinced me to buy one for myself. Thanks to everyone who contributed.

Congrats the SS are cool and its even cooler that you got one with metal sling studs. You are probably correct that its NOS. But maybe there is a hope that they have come to realize their mistake and stop cutting this corner isn't worth the savings over the value perceived...

The Marlin Pre-Remington modern system was:
Take the fist 2 numbers of the serial number
Minus 100
Gives you the 19XX or 20XX year
So 01 prefix minus 100 = 99
So that is 1999
But on the flip-side a 99 prefix would be 2001

In a way they were counting down toward the century. And now that 2000 has past they were counting down from 2100.

But that system seems to have stopped when they moved production...
Post Remington I don't think people have decoded the system.
My early Remington low serial number is MM prefixed...

Got the scope mounted, and removed the rear sight completely. When i took the front sight off there was a small section of unpolished stainless underneath. I assume I can just use some metal polish for the finish, but any ideas for the hole? Just leave it? Looks kinda crappy to me. I also found this for the rear sight empty dovetail. Anyone know if this will fit?

Finally got myself a 795. I own a low round count Papoose my dad handed to me but I choose keep it low count. So decided to get a 795 for my 22LR needs.

Marlin > Ruger, thats just me tho.

Sportsman warehouse in Rancho Cordova carries it for $149 but saw this one instead and decided to spend the extra $50 for the Stainless. Couldn't be more happier

After reviewing Chaos47 amazing information. Im having a hard time deciding what to do to lighten or improve the trigger pull on this. Man its stiff. I do plan to upgrade the stock with a Boyds. What do you guys suggest?

I have not used the Mcarbo kit.. So I really can not say about that. But I found the FOG CITY TACTICAL spring tweaking videos to be very helpful. I have done it to half a dozen rifles and they have all come out much better then stock. And free is always nice! IMO one of the easiest things is to just remove the trigger return spring.. its redundant as the trigger bar will reset the trigger.

The DIP is nice as it makes the pretravel and over travel much shorter resulting in better feel and the angle of the trigger face makes it perceived to be lighter.

Unfortunately I have not used the KAT either.

Boyds stocks are high quality for the price and your rifle will look great in any of them.

Cocked the bolt and did a few drop test, good to go. Im still going to do the full DIP upgrades and get a Boyds stock but Im going to wait on that since I am considering getting another 795 in blue to build a LTR Clone. Thanks for all the info you provided!

Yea I think I cut like half a coil on my first rifle and didn't bother on the others.

Reliability/Function > Lighter trigger every time IMO.

For being a free hack except just a bit of your time it works out really nice. Plus its nice to take apart the action and get familiar with its parts and functions.

While not as versatile in options of aftermarket design as the 10/22 you can still make these great rifles into all sorts of styles from airsoft bodies like "defcons" work or put it into one of Boyds stocks from traditional to exotic.

BTW depending on the age of your Papoose your magazines could be interchangeable. Or at least backwards compatible IE the 795 ones in the Papoose but maybe not the Papoose ones in the 795... it all depends if it has what I call the "nub" cut on the side of the magazine. If its a newer Papoose it might have the nub in the magazine well too. And then they would all be compatible. That or you could file down the nub in the 795 receiver.

The nub was added to make older 70HC High Capacity magazines not work in newer rifles.

I got to take out my rifle today and tested 4 brands I am holding.

CCI Mini Mags Standard
Winchester 333
Remington Thunderbolt
Federal Match Target

I zero'd at 25yards and here is my results.

I did 5 rounds on top then 5 rounds on the bottom. Went left to right. Then started over again adding 5 more rounds each with the same brand and I noticed that my zero was drifting to the right. UGH!!! And it was due to the crappy rings that came with my Simmons 22Mag scope. It was drifting backwards due to the recoil. I was pretty bummed because the colors match too. So I am going to have to go with ring set up for my scope. You seem to use the UTG 1 piece set up and I am going to consider it.




After re positioning the scope rings and re zeroing. I did another round of shooting. 10 rounds each target with only CCI Mini Mag since it seems to provide the best results. The center is my re-zeroing. Then went clockwise starting from top left and my last group is the bottom left corner. I ran out of time to move over the 100yrd (50 yards is not available) because had to pick up the kiddos from school. Before I go shooting again on this rifle. Im gonna get the one piece UTG set.



BTW, I am in love shooting 22LR!!!!! Next week Im gonna pick up a Marlin 795 in blue to build a LTR clone. This will be my sons rifle so we can go shooting together.
