ericneu, I was racking whats left of my brain trying to remember when and where I was digging up info on a Model 54 awhile back. freonr22 has one, check post #23 on this thread, he posted some pics too.
Now the real brain twister....he has a rare stainless barrel on his. Originally painted with Japanese black because stainless won't blue. His barrel is clearly marked STAINLESS STEEL, and yours is marked NICKLE STEEL.
I was just comparing pics and those barrels look like twins. What got me thinking was the way yours has the finish worn the same way, and it doesn't look like bluing, it looks like Jap black. I'm wondering if Winchester didn't mis stamp your barrel, and it is in fact stainless.
    Are you certain it's blued?
Measure that barrel for me, 20" would be a carbine, and 26" a rifle. It's in a Carbine stock, Carbine front sight, but the barrel looks longer in the pic.
I'm going to check with Bert and see if your gun will letter from Cody, and find out how it left the factory.

It's a 24" barrel. I don't know if it is/was blued or not. I only mentioned it because I "thought" I figured it out thru reading posts and talking to true weapon enthusiast like yourself. I have only recently come into possession of some obviously old weapons that have peeked my interest in finding out all I can about them. I had two pistols that my dad had in his collection, a Broomhandle Red 9 (Mauser) and a 1914 Luger 9mm. those were not heirlooms so I researched them enough to not get ripped off and sold them for my mother, this one is a keeper regardless of value, although knowing what I've got, what the value is and how to best maintain that value is of interest to me. My first thought when I saw the barrel was that it was suppose to be silver, but everything I've read said they were supposed to have been blued and therefore have a darker blue/black color which I see traces of around the stock. The stock does have hashing, though not evident in the pictures, as I said originally it is worn nearly smooth. though that could be a result of someone re-finishing the stock after it was chipped.

12hr shift on 4 hrs sleep when I posted, 24" AND 26" were the options on rifle barrels. I haven't had time to dig out the info for the stock repair guys, too much going on here with honeydo's for Xmas preparations, while I'm trying to get ready for the Spenceville shoot.
I'll give Bert a call this weekend and see if we can get some more info on this rifle.

No rush Trapp, I enjoy all the info you are coming up with. Take some time to get some rest, enjoy the holidays, and your shoot. Got a note from my Uncle, he has found a couple of the pieces for the sights, I'll get those sometime after the new year.

Made 1948-1957 with a total of 62,617 made. Yours was made Jan or Feb of 1949, with 10,212 made that year.

GeeDog, To date, no one has found any records for exact DOM on the Garands or Carbines that Winchester built. On the Carbines, there was five production runs, with the 1st run starting with serial number 1,000,000 in Sept of 1942, and ending with serial number 1,349,999 in Feb of 1944.
I would hazard a guess that yours was made early to mid 1943.

Josh, your 97 was made in late 1912 with 29,986 made that year.

GeeDog, I wouldn't bother if I didn't enjoy it! After 10 to 14hrs in a truck restraining myself from running over cars with Obama bumper stickers, this is how I unwind.
This thread has taken on a life of it's own, I was really surprised by the amount of Winchesters, and the rarity of some that have shown up here. There's a good deal of satisfaction, that I can give the family heirloom that's been hanging above the fireplace for 100yrs, an accurate date, and sometimes a little history. Keep em coming!

George, did I date that one for you?
Looks all correct as far as issued parts, the stock refinish and the metal sanding sadly cuts the value to less than half. The hard core collectors wouldn't give this one a second look. I'm not the best on values, but from what I've seen, $350-$450?
If this is a family heirloom to be passed down, and it was mine, I would go with a full restoration, Turnbull if you can afford it. If you got it as a shooter, keep that bare metal oiled, and enjoy it for what it is.

Im looking to purchase a Winchester Model 70 30-06 that is supposed to be pre-64. I am having a hard time finding a guideline for value. I dont want to get ripped off, heres some info on the gun:

all metal parts have been refinished in a very clean semi-gloss black. Stock has been changed out to a polymer stock. Rifle is wearing vintage redfield match grade iron sights. owner claims its a sub-MOA rifle. Its VERY heavy, but then again Im used to handling AR platforms. thanks for any info!

George, I can't say I'm 100% sure on that stock being refinished, I got another eye surgery before I can be 100% sure what is in front of me!
