And it has a 24in half octagonal barrel, half round.
Thank you for your hard work.Comment

Made 1916 around Feb, with 11, 362 made that year. And a low production year too.
freakdaddy, do a search on this thread for 1892, somewhere I posted the info for the guy doing a survey on 92's. Submit your rifle's info to him! He may be able to tell you if it will letter, and what's in the letter.
Lemoore still have that nice Trap range?
I use to shoot there with a couple of the F-18 mechanics about 10yrs ago. They got to bragging about how good they were, so I bet em pizza & beer my then 12yr old kid could clean their clocks with a 20ga 1100....with a skeet barrel. They bit and I reeled em in, he only missed one when they got scared and started to heckle him. I got pizza & beer.

I just inherited a Winchester Model 54 30 US GOV'T 06, serno 8150, 24" barrel. It has the leather sling, the hashing in the stock is worn to nearly smooth, there is chip missing from the stock at the back left of the bolt, but looks like original finish where the chip is missing.. is it possible this was original and not from damage? The metal has a silver appearance, I'm assuming this is the bluing wearing off from age/use?
This is a family heirloom so I'm not looking to sell, but I would like to know as much as anyone can tell me about it. My Uncle got it from his grandmother, but wasn't sure if it originally belonged to her brother or her son, but he it has been in the family since the time the rifle was in production. My uncle thought it may have been issued to one or the other while in the service or that they may have bought it surplus (based on the US Gov't stamp). I find to mention of this model rifle ever being used in the Military and believe the stamp was part of the chambering designation.
Thank you in advance for sharing any knowledge you have of this rifle.Last edited by ericneu; 12-18-2012, 4:44 AM.Comment

Your Model 54 was made in Jan of 1927, with 6,127 made that year, and only 50,145 were made from 1925 to 1936. You have a rare gun, I've only seen two in my entire life!I just inherited a Winchester Model 54 30 US GOV'T 06, serno 8150, 24" barrel. The 54 was a Mauser 98 clone, and the forerunner of the Model 70. They were only made for the commercial market, and Winchesters first successful bolt action rifle. Never intended to have a scope mounted, the were usually equipped with open sights or an aperture sight because of the throw on the bolt. They came in 4 grades, Standard, Carbine, Super Grade, and Target.
The caliber stamp is what would later become known as the 30-06 Springfield.
Post some pics of the rifle and that "chip", I may be able to add some more.Comment

Wish I still had my 78 Shovel.
That 94 was made mid 1937, with 39,731 made that year. My eye's are still a little messed up from the Lasik surgery, has that mag tube been replaced? Measure the barrel, and post a good clear pic of the muzzle end for me.Comment

Peter, your 1894 was made mid 1915, with 102,906 made that year, big bump in production that year. Less than 77,000 the year before, and less than 16,000 the year after. Winchester didn't break that record until 1948.Comment
