Does anyone know why the rifle needs to be sent back instead of just the trigger group?

Good question.... The recall page has an area to enter your serial number... If your gun is on the recall, there is an entry form to submit electronically.... Presumably there would be an instruction page or email after submitting the entry form.

I don't want to enter my info yet... But if someone else does, I hope they post details of what and how to send in.

Damn, just picked up my Rem 700 a couple of days ago. Sure enough, it is on the recall list.

I'd rather not deal with the recall, so I just went to Midway and ordered a Timney #517 trigger.

Dang, this is nice news to wake up to. At least they ship you the labels AND boxes to ship it back. I registered online and got a confirmation e-mail so now I'm just waiting for the items to arrive. On a side note, I wish those Remington stores where they are offering a 40% discount actually had something that I want.

www.galleryofguns.com lists ZERO 700's in stock. They still stock the 700P since it is assembled in the custom shop.

Remy stubbornly refuses to reengineer the (IMHO) stupid idea of interrupting the sear instead of blocking the trigger with their safety selector. Dirty trigger assemblies and readjusted triggers on the 700 do cause the rifle to unintentionally fire when slamming the bolt or touching the safety. Repeatability is a matter of the severity of maintenance issue or aggressive lightening of trigger pull. You can repeat this performance with certainty when the sear engagement lightenings up.

Personally I see something like excessive sealant as a impacting safety as a severe engineering flaw. NOTHING should ever cause a rifle to unintentionally discharge related to touching a safety or the bolt.

My new Varmint model is on the list. I filled out the online request and they are sending packaging materials to my house without telling me before hand. I'm not returning my rifle it has an aftermarket trigger already.

So does anyone know how they'll fix the problem once they get the rifle?

Probably put in a 20lb trigger so it will never discharge.

If they volunteer to replace the XMP with a 40X trigger, this recall would actually be worthwhile.
