How is that Long Ranger shooting?Comment

Hw, I was out there with Mark and Chris yesterday and the three of us shot the LR. It's accurate enough, but, all agree it needs some trigger work, VERY heavy trigger, robbing accuracy. Mark mentioned he'll contact Henry about it. All in all, a very productive day shooting. Could not have asked for better conditions. No ammo shortage at the MLC!

Well I just got a Tracking Number from UPS, Delivery Date 10-19-21 to my FFL.I hope yours arrives in a timely manner. I'm starting to think my levers in .357 magnum are not going to happen.
I like the 20" octagonal barrel on that 1873 but I don't own a lever action with a pistol grip stock. I've read that some shooters think the recoil from .41 and .44 magnum is easier to handle with a pistol grip stock. Maybe someone here has experience shooting both.Comment

Hmm, had a buddy that had one and he loved it. He sold it too and I ain't forgive yet for not letting me know. It was in .223 and was a fine shooter but he said it was just too nice a piece to be a truck gun banging around the ranch all the time. He bought a Ruger Ranch Rifle in .223 with the proceeds. Definitly a step down in the looks dept but perhaps a tad more practical for him. His would shoot the lights out for sure.Hw, I was out there with Mark and Chris yesterday and the three of us shot the LR. Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

I was offered a four-round mag of not-inexpensive commercial .308 hunting loads and at my first shot attempt, during the trigger pull I had to stop and ask if there might be a safety still switched on. Far too heavy a trigger.
Windage was consistent, but elevation varied. Rifle was on bags.
The conditions were near perfect as they always seem to be when we hit the MLC Motherland. This shoot fell together at the last minute and I barely had time to pack my gear.
I brought my Marlin 39A with CCI Standard Velocity, some Quiet and some CBLong. Great tin can plinkers.
Also had the Marlin 1894FG and both commercial and handloaded .41 Magnum. It seemed to like 17.5 grains 2400 under a 210 gr Nosler sjhp that grouped better than the rest.
Too, I brought along my 1895GS and some 400 grain Speer sjfp loads that I lobbed 200 yards at an enemy fire extinguisher scouting from atop a rock out yonder.
Hanguns in attendance were a Springfield parkerized Loaded, a Ruger Blackhawk .45 Convertible, a three-screw Single Six and a Browning 1911-22.
Great day overall, fellers. Looking forward to another.

Yeah, it was a hellava day. Chris, what was that really accurate load in the .45 Colt BH? That load did NOT miss! May have to replicate that one.

Like Tom said, it's not what I expected. I have a email sent to Henry. It's pretty bad when a .357 lever gun out shoots a .308 lever gun.
That little Browning 1911 Chris has is pretty nice. I think I can find room in the safe for one of those.Last edited by golfish; 10-14-2021, 12:50 PM.It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

That little Browning 1911...
The more I shoot that lil' thing the more I like it. Just wish I could put combat style sights on it. Those OG G.I. sights made 85% just make 'em worse.

Tom, if you're talking about the loads *I* was shootin' from the Ruger Convertible, they were a 200 grain lead round-nose flat-point over 9 grains Unique in Starline .45 Colt brass, large pistol standard primers.
Zippy! although the next batch of any handloads I might make in .45 Colt will use a 250 grain coated from the maker of the slugs you were using that left your bore so nice..
