I've been loading and shooting 6.0 of an OLD keg of Red Dot, under a 255 Keith for my buntline and plinking loads for my marlins. Seems to shoot pretty well for me. I haven't experimented with much else, as I want to use up this 13 lbs of Red Dot I have laying around (down to about 9 now), but maybe this fall I'll tinker and come up with an ideal load.

6gr AL-5 under a 200gr SWC that was meant for .45acp

I got you beat for old powder (maybe?). I have a couple cans of ALCAN AL-5 that I picked up from somewhere. I happen to have a pretty good selection of vintage loading books, and lo and behold.... there was a recipe for AL-5 and 200gr SWC, so that's what I used. Worked pretty well, so I'm going to continue with the AL-5 and burn up the rest of it. I have plenty of other suitable powders for the .45 Colt on-hand - Bullseye, Unique, 700x, W540, etc., so finding another load won't be an issue when the AL-5 is all gone.

I don't know how old this is, but it was a 13 lb cardboard keg that already looked ancient when I got it 15 or 18 years ago. I didn't reload then, and figured I'd store it away in the conex for a rainy day or to help burn blackberries or something. A bunch of years go by, with horrible storage of it, and I am a couple years in to loading my own ammo and decide what the hell, I've got 13 lbs of this old powder, may as well see if it's still worth a crap.

Tinkered and played and found 9mm, 40, 45acp, 38 special, some rifle stuff, and now 45 colt loads with it and it works perfectly well. Not super consistent, but consistent enough I have no fear of danger. It shoots about as consistent velocity as any steel case ammo, which is good enough for free plinking!

The process also helped me get a lot more confident with learning how to use/determine safety of old powder and primers. And I still have both eyes and ten fingers.

I have no problem using old powders, as long as it is still stable and viable. Even in these crazy times, older powder often goes for cheap because everyone wants H4350 or Varget for their 6.5 Creedmoors. No one knows what to do with the older Winchester stuff, ALCAN, etc. I do. Old reloading manuals are priceless to me, and the recipes contained therein have saved me a lot of money and allowed me to use up some good, otherwise unwanted powder on the cheap.

For example, Discontinued Winchester W540 is identical HS-6, according to Hodgdon. I often find older, still fresh 1lb cans of W540 for $5/LB.

I was local, at one time. Grew up in the SFV, chased rabbits and shot off model rockets in the dirt where they grew up Lancaster. Used to hunt quail off of Red Rover Mine road, too. Moved to NorCal, spent 30+ years there, and then pulled the plug and moved to Idaho.

Wanting to shoot with you guys almost makes me wish I was still there. Almost.
