that four footer cut down in front of the barn is a honey locust, the other stuff in the woods is mostly black locust and hedge

I reckon I could bring back some pieces if any of that's any good for stocks on something, just let me know by tuesday

this is why we had to drop the honey locust but still some clear wood from up top

heard it creaking in the wind one day and found these cracks I could see clear through

if y'all hadn't seen em before, these are black locust thorns, not friendly trees at all

of course hedge isn't really either, and they smart when they pierce you, irritates your skin

I started out with nothing - and I still have most of it

Dang those are nasty thorns! I see black locust used occasionally. I've got an old oak piece that was salvaged form a barn in MO that was built in the 1800s Its kinda cool. I call it historic oak:

I use to cut up a some of the black oak out at our ranch. Some really cool burls etc but by the time ya got it all cut to size and processed out of a burl the size of a small beach ball ya might get two very small sets of scales that wern't cracked or punky. Kinda like your honey locust. Way too much work for the yield. I kinda gave up on that deal.

What kinda sidearm I got there boys? Haven't carried that one in over a decade probably.

          A blued 1911 in .45?

Because in the almost four years I've known you I've seen you wear your J-frames, a nifty little Colt whirlinpopper, a 9mm Springfield EMT or your stainless 10mm 1911 you found two years ago...

OK Got here a little late to this discussion but I'm here to tell you that all guns have to go thru a break in period. That is because they are machined out of metal and the surfaces that contact each other have different "Surface Profiles" by virtue of having different cutting tools used on each one.

These surfaces rub together and develop the same surface profiles as they wear in.

I don't know how many rounds it takes to break in a 1911 but I would say that it is at least 6-800 rounds depending on the quality and "Fit" of the gun. I know that some of the Hand Fit Guns are so tight at the outset that when they break in the amount of side movement in the slide is virtually un-detectable. There is only enough room for lubricant.

Glocks which really aren't "precision guns" like a $3000 1911 still take 800+ rounds to break in, and the wear is on the slide ways as the mating ways on the frame are "Heat Treated Electroless Nickle". All the internal steel parts in a Glock are also coated with the same process and have to rub against each other to wear in. That coating also goes away as it is only .0005 thick so the trigger parts have to be replaced periodically.

As far a lubricants I use"Amsoil 20-50 Racing Oil" and Vaseline on all my guns. The Amsoil stays on the job better than anything I've ever used, so I use it exclusively on all my machines in my shop. I even bought some little 1/2 oz. bottles off Amazon to package the stuff so there is a little bottle in every gun case and with every gun. The stuff makes my A5 run so smooth it is scary.
And yes JMB recommended 30 wt. Motor Oil for all his guns. Good reason for this,,, all his guns were built like machinery and machinery works well with 30 wt. Motor Oil. I just went synthetic and took it a step farther. The Vaseline is for Shotgun Hinges and places with heavy contact like Bolt Locking Lugs that move slowly. It was recommended by a Friend who only deals in High Dollar Shotguns ($20K+)

So Gollfish,,, You need to go shoot the hell out of that gun, which is what it was made to do in the first place. You will develop a real bond with the gun, which will make you love it more!

                    A 9mm Short? A .38 Super after a long night of drinking?

Some of my favorites are the surprisingly great values of neat firearms that go bang every time. My 16" blued Rossi 92 .357 is one of those.

got an 1800's barn too but not sure how to tell what kind of wood it's built out of

do know it's mortise and tenon and literally sitting there on limestone blocks, no footings or buried posts

probably same or similar age, also sitting on limestone blocks

I reckon there's some decent gun/knife stocks in there somewhere if someone knew how to find it
I started out with nothing - and I still have most of it

Those buildings are just cool! I was given an old board by the folks that own a Mexican furniture store down in Bakersfield. We've done business with them for years and have become quite friendly. Enrique didn't know what it was. It was very dense and heavy, kinda ironwood heavy. The board on the right was mesquite and our mystery board is on the left here:

It sat in the shop for a couple of months till I got around to cutting it up so I didn't have to move those two boards around all the time. So as soon as I cut into it I knew what it was by the smell. It smelled like dill pickles. The yellow sawdust confirmed it. It was bocote, a tropical hardwood from the Cancun area (Yucatan Peninsula) in Mexico. Gorgeous stuff that I've worked with quite a bit in the past. A cracked piece near the end:

All sanded and polished up. Made this one for Enrique for giving me those two boards:

That oak board was all freshly planed on all four sides so it was obviously oak.

No sir, I've never tried grips although I've often though about it. While it might seem similar to knife making and putting handles on a blade. Its not. Even before CA mammoth ivory ban of July 1 2016, Nichole, my wife had bought a really cool set of mammoth ivory scales. She wanted me to make them into a set of grips for her Colt Mustang. They still sit in the safe untouched.
