If you want to shoot the 600 yard steel targets at Angeles, a .223 and some bulk 55gr FMJ ammo will also do the trick just fine.

My only concern is that the OP did specify a "sniper rifle". To me, that means a rifle that an actual sniper will use. Since they are bolt actions, you can bring in actual sniper rifles even as labelled "sniper rifle". For some reason, some people are turned off by the term, but if that is what the manufacturer calls it, it is what it is. All the rifles I know of that are labelled and sold as "sniper rifles" cost quite a bit of money.

I don't know whom Flouncer is talking about. It can't be Noma Mayo as her gear would cost a new Shooter over $7000
There are not a lot of 65 year old lady shooters at Sacramento and Teds wife Brenda is not that old.
Flouncer must be talking about somebody else.
He did say the OP was talking to the wrong people so I await his response on the 65 year olds identity.
I will give Bob Dorton and Jerry Tierney a call and see who Flouncer is shooting with who is beating them with a Mosin or K98 at 1000 yards.
Maybe Lane or Peter White will see this post and E-Mail me the answer.
Whomever she is she beat some good shooters with a horrible rifle. I would like to have seen that.
Edit: I forgot she probably beat Gamboa and both Mayo shooters to boot. That Mosin must be the world's most accurate Mosin

If you look at Flouncers post he is recommending a Mosin and a 65 year old lady beat a lot of champions shooting one or a K98.
Never owned a Mosin as they look like surplus garbage but if they are beating national champions lets all buy 15 of them.

True, but the OP had a requirement of sub-MOA out of the box. Some of those 70 year old barrels don't have lands anymore so you gotta find one with a barrel that's hasn't seen too much work and was stored well. If he is willing to get a new barrel (I'd go 308 cal for bullet selection), it is certainly a viable option.

If you are going to get serious, start with the platform the professionals use, get a Remington 700P and with the 26" heavy barrel. Then get some Leopold Rings and some good glass.

Lynn, check out Classic Firearms. They always have a solid product at a great price. Apparently, a new shipment smaller crates have come. If you purchase 18 rifles, they come at $180 each. Check out the video; some of those look very nice.

The way I understood his post is a 65 year old lady using iron sights beat a bunch of guys with scopes. The hitting the targets X with Mauser was him. The getting a Mosin, M98 or Remington are for learning and having fun.

If the lady was Noma Mayo she is a 4 time state champion and a national record holder.
I would expect her to beat everybody on this forum except for SwitchBarrel and myself.
Surely Flouncer wasn't comparing someone with a million bullets downrange to our original poster was he?
If yes that post takes the cake for a new low.

OP, I'm in the process of doing the same as you.
I'm clearing out some my deadwood and wanting to get set up with a
                          precision rifle.
It's taken me a while to make up my mind on what route I want to go and
how much I want to spend.
                          A few years ago I purchased a new\used Rem700 .308 SPS Tactical 20" heavy barrel for a project.
It's been sitting in the safe unfired just waiting to be reborn. I've just started picking up parts last week.
Only after doing a lot of reading and talking it over with a few people
that shoot long range precision rifles on a regular basis, I've come to realize that there is no way around
not spending some money to be shooting accurately at distance... consistently!
Everyone's definition of accuracy is not the same. Some people are content
with MOD (minute of deer - 3" @100yds.
My goal for now with my new parts is to get out on steel at about 300-400 yards and with some minor upgrades
to the SPS. Then work up from there after I feel that I'm going to continue on this long range quest.
Then I'll feel better about investing more in the rifle if it's a go.
For now my upgrades are adding the following.
                          Basic R700 SPS 20" .308 $400 (used)
Bell & Carlson Tactical Medalist Style 2 stock $250
                          Timney 510 trigger $100
                          Harris S-BRM Hinged Base 6 - 9-Inch BiPod $100

At $850 total (minus a scope\rings) into the rifle at this point, I can say I'm just scratching the surface on
what I've leaned and where I want this to go.
Mind you I'm not getting top of the line precision parts at this point, just ones that are a great bang for the
buck and proven performers in boosting the 700.
I'll shoot it for a while, take some classes or get instruction and get
a real feel for it. There is no cheating the wind with a .308 I'm told and it's the best platform to learn on.
Later if things work out I can see a good 24" barrel, a one piece bolt,
action job, and a break being installed. So that's about another $1,500
going in. But time will tell what level I'm at after round #1.

Noma WAS probably who he saw. She is in her mid 60's and is one of the best I've had the pleasure to shoot with (not against). She, Jim, Lane and Bob tie their turns at the top in HighPower and I've seen what they can do on the smaller F-Class target (when they somehow were out of HP 1K targets).

Noma has been competing since 1975.

Yes. I recommend a new shooter buy any gun they can. Because they are fun.

Not really. Technically I shoot a little USPSA but it's for fun. I'm not trying to be competitive. Nor could I be, yet.

I don't own any Mosins or K98s. I'm sure you can outshoot me. It's acually pretty sad that you have to resort to that as some kind of last attempt to goad me.

If you look at the post by Killshot44 who also shoots extremely well at Sacramento you will find he also thinks Flouncer is talking about Noma.
So with all the humility I can muster his post is ridiculous and got treated with all the respect it deserved again I am using all the humility I can muster.
The OP was after light target shooting and comparing that to one of the best shooters in the nation is quite silly at best.
Recommending a military rifle with a shot out barrel horrible stock and terrible trigger shows he and you are both merely trolling this thread.
In a nutshell we are seeing your class and yes that is as humble as I can post it.
What is worse is I give posters a chance to prove me wrong and make money while doing it and no takers. Here is your chance to shut down the drivel and you live close enough to do it.
