I'll try to answer as best I can, your post confuses me as well

for the most part, an AR upper is an AR upper, they are physically interchangalbe between AR rifle and AP pistol. Legally no, by physically yes.

In order to acquire an AR pistol, most people in CA either have to build an AR pistol from an 80% lower or buy one that is already assembled. But once you have that legal pistol, there is no need to reDROS it if you change the configuration.


for the most part, no, you can't just buy a pistol lower (even if it is completely assembled) and then put your own pistol upper on it. Reason being, you can't DROS that lower as a pistol if it isn't a complete pistol. Therefore, it gets DROSed as a long gun, and it might be illegal to assemble a long gun DROSed lower into a pistol. It might run afoul of CA's SBR laws.

My Troy M7A1 upgrade is a cross of the 2010 & 2011 models. The 2010 models come standard with the Vltor upper, Noveske KX3 & the Troy MRF hand guard. Whereas the 2011 comes with a regular upper & Troy Claymore & TRX handguard. So I choose the Vltor Billet upper as an extra cost option to the 2011 design.

As for the stock, that's just in there to fill the foam cutout space
