You can just strap rifles to your back if you have a sling. You could even carry them across your lap, really carefully. I usually take the car though, since the range has a bunch of gravel and I'd rather not risk a dump.

As long as it's unloaded, there's no limitation of how you have to transport a long gun. It doesn't have to be in a locked case, so you can literally Rambo the thing through town Prepare to be hassled by cops who don't know any better.

Just as an update, on topic. I went to the Walmart in Windsor, CA and all the ammunition had been removed from the shelves. I'm not sure if it was a "for good" thing, or if they were doing inventory -- I got mixed answers from the well-educated non-English speaking personnel at Walmart.

Later in the afternoon I travelled to Ukiah, and the Walmart there (bless them) still had plenty of ammunition on the racks.

Just came back from a trip to North North CA. Picked up 500 rounds of 45 from the Medford Oregon Wal Mart. The girl behind the counter was a little shocked I bought 5 boxes. Should have bought more. Tax free is great. Oh well, next time. Kinda weird seeing guns at Wal Mart.

I love Oregon, think I'll plan a trip up there soon. Take the coast route. Pick up some of that tax free ammo and check out the cheap prices on guns at WallyWorld. Who knows I might even surrender my California resident status while I'm up there...

If thats the case then anyone with a valid sellers permit can sell ammo? I wonder what the wholesale pricing is direct from the supplier's warehouse?

If you want to place an order in the area of $30-$50k using your reseller's permit, you might get pricing close to what you'll pay at Outdoor Marksman or Ammoman. Volume gets the pricing, and $100k orders are small business.

So I learned my lesson and went to Wal Mart BEFORE work this afternoon. I picked up the last 3 value pack boxes of WWB 45 and 3 more boxes of the WWB 9mm. They had PLENTY of 9mm and .40 left and they said they had no word on NOT selling ammo. So for the San Diegans, take 805 South and exit Palm ave (the second one AFTER national city) Its the palm ave after olympic pkwy. Take a left and wal marts on the right by Vons. Have at it.

Fwiw, just stopped over at the Vallejo Wal-Mart and they still have ammo for sale, including the 100 rd. value boxes of WWB 9mm, .38, .40, and .45 (minus a couple of boxes of .45 now).

The store is located on Hwy 29/Sonoma Blvd., just north of Hwy 37 (in the Meadowlark Plaza). About 5 min. detour off of I-80, if you happened to be going to/from the Bay Area and Sacto/Tahoe/Reno, or beyond.

The clerk did mention she has been getting calls on whether or not they still had ammo...

Don't know about Fairfield or Vacaville (yet)...

I haven't tried this yet, but my folded Keltec fits in a backpack, and 5.56 is light.

FYI both the Livermore and Antioch Walmarts no longer carry ammo. I have not yet tried Pittsburg, but I suspect is doesn't as well.

lol you should see when I buy ammo at walmart I usually end up spending $500 on 9mm and 45 value packs...

Friday I get paid. Saturday and Sunday Miwall throws the doors open for Father's Day. It's the only day of the year they sell direct. None of wally's Bulk packs for a while!!
