Wal*Mart up here had ammo piled up on the floor behind the counter, no other place to put it. I bought another 1000 rounds of assorted 9mm, 45ACP and . 223 tonight. I'm going to have to build a underground blast bunker to store it all. Jeez...this is getting weird...

I emailed Wal-Mart to ask why ammo is being removed from their stores. The following is my question and their answer.

I am aware that numerous California Walmart stores have stopped selling
firearms ammunition. This is very dissapointing to me as I have
regularly and frequently relied on Walmart as a reliable source for quality
ammunition. Can you explain the reason for this change? Why does it
only seem to effect certain stores? Is ammunition going to be removed
from all California stores?

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. has made a business decision to remove firearms
from approximately 1000 locations within the U.S. beginning March 6,
2006. This decision is based on diminished customer relevancy and demand
within multiple markets.

As with all merchandise decisions that we make our decision to remove
guns from Wal-Mart locations is simply based on the lack of customer
demand for firearms in a given community. We will now be able to utilize
our resources more effectively to provide customers with the
merchandise that they wish to purchase -- and to discontinue merchandise that they show no interest in.

I will inquire as to my local stores (Roseville), but I don't expect them to provide a list of all CA stores that will be discontinuing ammo sales.

They sent me the same form reply, but they didn't answer the question. The Walmart in Union City has not sold firearms for as long as I've been shooting. . .which hasn't been all that long, but I've never seen firearms sold there. I wrote this reply back to them without response.

I was not referring to the sale of firearms in stores. Firearms have not been sold for quite some time in the stores in the San Francisco Bay Area. Recently, ammunition has been pulled off of the shelves in several stores including Union City, Natomas Market Place (Sacramento), and Martinez while other stores inside California like Yuba City, Marysville, Willows, Chico, Paradise, Red Bluff, and Redding appear to still carry ammunition.

You have customer demand in this area. I often went to the Walmart in Union City and purchased the entire on-hand stock of 9mm and .45 ACP Winchester Value Pack ammunition. I went on 5/23/06 with the intent of purchasing 20 boxes of ammunition or your entire stock onhand for a shooting school event I was planning to attend. The ammunition was in the store, and your clerks were removing it from the shelves and refused to sell to me claiming they no longer have any ammunition in stock when clearly there was stock right in front of me. Then, they claimed to be doing inventory, and that ammunition would be available after inventory. Now, it appears ammunition has been permanently removed from the shelves altogether.

I have been a loyal customer due to the availability and pricing of your ammunition. It is well known within the shooting community that Walmart provides quality ammunition at great prices with convenient locations throughout the Bay Area. I know that I am not the only customer who routinely purchases all available Winchester value pack or Remington UMC ammunition in stock in Union City or Milpitas en route to the shooting range. You have customer demand especially in the Bay Area. If there are other political or legal pressures, effecting your descisions, please let us know how we can be of help. I would like to continue purchasing ammunition from Walmart as I have for the past 3 years. Word has spread quickly about ammuntion being pulled from the shelves in the Bay Area.
