Good thing this thread isn't called "do you keep a beside cell phone and live next to a police station." I''ll keep you in my prayers SB.

G21 at foot of bed, AP101 on nightstand, 870 behind door. An unloaded gun is just a piece of plastic/metal in your hand to throw when an emergency strikes.

Uh, of course I keep multiple guns near the bed.

No, I live in very nice areas.

I do it for the same reason I wear a seatbelt when I am in a car, carry health and auto insurance - because $*(&^ happens.

No offense, but how old are you? Do you own any guns?

This was what I had, until this thread got me thinking ...

I had figured I was safer with nothing in the chamber, and that's true to a point. However, racking the slide to chamber a round puts me in SA mode, perhaps somewhere I don't want to be before the first shot ... ???

I usually don't keep a bed side gun. The safe isn't far from my bed but during these warmer months, my windows are wide open so I keep my gun in the drawer of my nightstand, magazine in, not chambered.

Having a kid in the house, I wake up take the mag out and put the gun back in the safe before I go to work.

Side question: I use the same loaded magazine every night so it doesn't get cycled (until I go to the range). Is it ok to keep the mag full for a long period of time (specifically concerned about reliability). Or should I remove the rounds and re-insert more frequently?

I had an HK40C that had a fully loaded mag for 8 years untouched and shot perfectly fine with all 10rds when I switched to a different brand hollow points.

OT- Springs wear out with the amount of compression cycles, not the amount of time it is compressed.

Several years ago, an _idiot_ neighbor of mine decided to flirt with me (and the appalling thing is, I do think he really expected it to be received as flirtation!) by suggesting that I should wear something "real pretty" to bed, because he was going to break in some night and ravish me.
I smiled sadly and told him I really, really, really wished he wouldn't do that, because since I don't sleep wearing my glasses, by the time I realized it was just him, it would be too late, since he'd have taken a 12Ga. shotgun blast, close range, to his chest, and he'd be dead before the EMTs arrived. And I'd just feel terrible about that!
He treated me with quite a bit more respect, and a lot less flirtation, after that. Funny what will cool the ardor.

Just a no option would have worked for me, I can't comment on other peoples' situation like that. So don't take my no vote as claiming anyone is paranoid. I just happen to live in a pretty safe area and have kids in the house. I really don't feel the need, at home, to be armed.

Having said that, I respect and support everyone else's choice to arm themselves.

SW 5904 loaded and ready to go double action. Beretta 32 tomcat same deal. Have extra mags for the bi-monthly trip to the range, frangables stay in the other mags. Good neighborhood, but woke up one night to the sound of my trash cans falling over, followed by someone trying to come in through a window. At the time, guns in safe, but in my state of mind, could not open it. Combo unit at 2:00 am in low light is tough. Thankfully they ran off when they heard noise inside the house. Cops showed 10 minutes later...

No more guns in safe unless we are not at home. Wife shoots with me at range as well. I call her for my safety when I am coming home late

Glock 19 on the nightstand, mag in, not chambered.. My idea is that the sound of a round being chambered with make whoever it is think twice about what they are going to do.

The nightstand safes are the best thing since sliced bread. I am not going to be unarmed at home at night, regardless of where I live. But with three kids in the house, I'm not going to leave a loaded weapon unsecured and available to snoopy little hands.

So, a nightstand gunsafe with a multi-button combination. I can open it in less time it takes to find the gun, mag, insert mag, and rack the slide, and it is a lot less noisy too. Additionally, it holds two weapons, so that my wife's Glock is secured but ready to go, also.
