Last thing before bed each night the S&W M&P .40 goes on the nightstand, loaded and chambered. Alternating rounds of HP and FMJ, starting with HP in the chamber. In the morning it goes back in the safe, also in the bedroom. At night the safe is closed but not locked, and first long gun in the rack is the FN SLP Mk 1 12 GA with a full mag of high velocity 00 Buck, none chambered. Second one is my Stag M4gery 5.56, full mag, none chambered. Behind that is the SOCOM 16 in 7.62, full mag, none chambered. Extra full mags for the Stag and SOCOM on the shelf, along with extra full mags for the M&P .40 and a full bandoleer of 12 GA buck and slugs for the FN SLP. If I need extra tools in the middle of the night, they are ready and waiting. Nightstand lower shelf has my KaBar and Maglight 3-cell flashlight. Next to the M&P .40 is a remote control to trigger the lights in the rest of the house. Something goes bump in the night, it gets illuminated, then it gets eliminated. During the day, all firearms go in the safe, closed but not locked. If I leave the premises, the safe gets locked, and unlocked again when I get home.
All that being said, it's just precautionary. Nice neighborhood, nice neighbors, not LEO or .mil, just not ever going to be a victim of unpreparedness.
