Now that I've summed up any possible negatives. OP, if you like it, and you shoot it well, BUY IT! They are reliable, they shoot bullets, and if they strike your fancy, that's the _ONLY_ thing that matters.

Hi all-- wondering if I could get some thoughts/opinions on this weapon. Been looking at getting a back up handgun to my P226 in a compact. Thought I would go the P229 route since I'm a SIG guy but I fell in love with the G19 when I demo'd her at my range. Shot great with it from the first round--feels great in my hand and plenty accurate. The only thing I did not like was the mag release. Perhaps because the gun was a range whore and the release was dirty, the mag would be "sticky" and not drop out when I hit the button. Is this common? I also plan on getting night sights installed- should I got Trijicon (which I have on my SIG) or Mepro?

Why get another 9mm? Well, I have a ton of it for my SIG so I won't have to invest in more $$$ (5.56 ammo takes a chunk out of my ammo budget too). It leaves my ammo inventory nice and simple not having to keep track of another caliber. Lastly, I don't have any probs with 9mm in terms of "stopping power"- I grew up shooting it and went to war with it. Again, this will be a back up to my P226. Something I can use when the SIG goes down or in for repair (like it is now).

Your thoughts on the G19 and should I try or look at any other similar guns? Fyi-- tried the P229 (which I love, but not keen on shelling out $800+); the M&Ps don't fit my hand well and I didn't like the trigger; the HK USP looked and felt nice, but haven't been able to find a place to try them out. Lastly, what is this whole Gen 3, Gen 4 thing? Are the later Gens better? I guess it doesn't matter since we can't buy them here anyway. Any chance the Gen 4 will make it here and I should wait for it?

Waiting for Riflegear to get more in with night sights-- checked out Glockstore too in San Diego and may go with them. Thanks for your replies.

It really doesnt seem dwarfed at all compared to some manufactures. The 19 and 17 shoot the same for me, with the 19 having better ergos. I'd probably consider it a bit large as a backup, but you definitely aren't loosing anything IMO from the 17.

So I just got off the phone with Glockstore-- very cool guys btw. They recommended getting the stainless steel recoil rod/spring to replace the factory plastic one-- kinda surprised to learn the rod was plastic--kinda bendy with all that torque I would think. Any need for this? Also, I was planning on having them install the Trijicon night sights, but the guy I spoke with preferred the Truglos saying they glow brighter. Don't know anything about Truglos.

If you can find a local dealer who is a participating GSSF vendor then you can save some cash on a new Glock. I see used Glocks selling for the price of a new GSSF Glock here in the buy and sell forum. The only thing you need to add in is the cost of the GSSF membership itself. I paid $80 for 3 years but Glocks typically sell for $600+ new and I can buy 1 new Glock for each year of my membership. I plan on ending with a Glock 20, Glock 34, and probably a Glock 17 when it is all said and done.

In order to qualify for GSSF pricing you need a minimum of a 2 year membership.

Personally, I prefer the plastic one. The rear of the guide rod contacts the plastic frame. It acts as a buffer between the recoil spring and the frame.

Consider the guide rod a sacrificial part.

Install Heinie Ledge night sights and do not touch anything else.

If you get a G19, put a G17 trigger in it. The G17 trigger has a smooth face and feels much better. Compare them side by side and you'll understand why.

Keep the stock OEM guide rod and spring. There is absolutely NO reason to switch it to an after market design, especially if you aren't competing in some open class. The OEM guide rod will not melt and is designed to work with the pistol. Even if it does break for w/e reason, the gun will still work until taken apart. If you're worried about it, spend $7 or what ever it is and get a spare.

For the sights, I prefer the Warren Tactical sights. It's really a preference thing.
