    GLOCK 19 Questions

Hi all-- wondering if I could get some thoughts/opinions on this weapon. Been looking at getting a back up handgun to my P226 in a compact. Thought I would go the P229 route since I'm a SIG guy but I fell in love with the G19 when I demo'd her at my range. Shot great with it from the first round--feels great in my hand and plenty accurate. The only thing I did not like was the mag release. Perhaps because the gun was a range whore and the release was dirty, the mag would be "sticky" and not drop out when I hit the button. Is this common? I also plan on getting night sights installed- should I got Trijicon (which I have on my SIG) or Mepro?

Why get another 9mm? Well, I have a ton of it for my SIG so I won't have to invest in more $$$ (5.56 ammo takes a chunk out of my ammo budget too). It leaves my ammo inventory nice and simple not having to keep track of another caliber. Lastly, I don't have any probs with 9mm in terms of "stopping power"- I grew up shooting it and went to war with it. Again, this will be a back up to my P226. Something I can use when the SIG goes down or in for repair (like it is now).

Your thoughts on the G19 and should I try or look at any other similar guns? Fyi-- tried the P229 (which I love, but not keen on shelling out $800+); the M&Ps don't fit my hand well and I didn't like the trigger; the HK USP looked and felt nice, but haven't been able to find a place to try them out. Lastly, what is this whole Gen 3, Gen 4 thing? Are the later Gens better? I guess it doesn't matter since we can't buy them here anyway. Any chance the Gen 4 will make it here and I should wait for it?

Waiting for Riflegear to get more in with night sights-- checked out Glockstore too in San Diego and may go with them. Thanks for your replies.

I have a gen 2 glock 19 (last of the descent ergo glocks IMO). It is awesome, I would say definitely buy a glock. Everyone NEEDs a glock and a 1911 in their firearms collection. I don't like the ergos though. So, I bought an M&P9 (much better). And there is nothing wrong with owning a bunch of 9mm pistols. I have quite a few

I am not joking when I say that EVERY PERSON who owns and shoots handguns for pleasure or home protection should own either a GLOCK 19 or a GLOCK 17.

To the extent that the Federal Government should give every citizen a GLOCK 19 or 17 on their 18th Birthday. (a written and practical test should be required as well; we OWE our young people a GUN EDUCATION)

Buy a GLOCK 19 and install your choice of sites. The install is easy.

      Never sell your glock. (s)

Fewer people are killed with all rifles each year (323 in 2011) than with shotguns (356), hammers and clubs (496), and hands and feet (728).

OMG, you are SO off the mark here.
        1. You are pushing a gun type down our throats.
        2. You are in favor of a written/practical test.

        Sorry, gotta go BARF.

Well while someone is getting sick over the Glock love, I have to say get the 19. I have bought and sold many handguns over the years trying to find the right one. The 19 has been there from day one and will still be there. In fact it is the only serious semi pistol I own right now. The rest are fun guns. It is a second generation ,never been able to get attached to the third gen. Seems to be the right size, weight, and balance. I had and sold other glocks (22 3rd gen and 27 3rd gen) and did not like the feel of them, so I am not a kool aid drinker. But the 19 was always just right. Get out and shoot it.

I guess you don't have a HSC card then? You have to take a written test to get one. And you have to have that card to buy a handgun.

I believe in the 2nd Amendment and like Arizona, you should be allowed to carry without jumping thru hoops.

Why not give every school kid in America a few handgun/ rifle safety and shooting lessons? Gun education promotes gun safety. My generation grew up with guns, we had a .22 in the kitchen over the back door.

This new generation isn't into shooting sports, gun safety or even owning guns in some areas. ! That makes me barf.

In some countries (not ours) all Males get an assault rifle to keep at home for several years. Why not start our young people off with a voucher for a discount on a handgun or rifle..?...Crime rates and accidental shootings would drop. Just like states with Shall Issue Carry laws.

I have a Gen 2 Glock 19, which I have put 600 rounds through personally, and compared to a Sig P226 it is a little snappier in regards to recoil. Slide release, mag release are all within easy reach for those who have smaller hands. You won't have the decocker in the way. I never liked the position of the decocker on Sig's but that is because I shot mostly Beretta's my whole life.

I have never had issues with mags dropping using the mag release. Sounds like a dirty gun issue.

Take down and cleaning are simple once you get used to the mechanics of the take down manipulation.

I have always been a Glock hater but I am satisfied with my Glock 19 for what it is. A no frills reliable handgun that goes bang every time I pull the trigger. Accuracy is just fine too.

                **Edit**

If you plan on buying new and are not LEO then get a 2 year GSSF membership so you can buy one at the GSSF price. I signed up for 3 years and will probably use my first GSSF coupon on a Glock 20.

I think his point was not being so anti-gun, but rather the forced selection. I like the idea. Let's give everyone Glock-valued vouchers. It'll be up to the individual to shell out the extra if Glock isn't their thing.

                        My opinion:

Buy a G19 and shoot it back to back with your SIG. Over the course of several range trips, determine which you like better or shoot more naturally with. If it turns out you just like the 226 better, you can always sell the G19 and put the money toward a 229 or 228.

Another option: SIG P239 in 9mm. It uses different mags, but it still fits the role of small backup even better than the 229.

In any event, you're going to be happy with whatever you purchase; they're all good guns.
Then another horse PONY came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a huge sword. My kinda guy.

Great suggestions - thanks. I hear you on the 239-- great gun. and in some ways it would be a better back up to the 229. but no rail for a light (and I don't think Surefire makes an adapter mount for it) which is a requirement for me.

                            Two thoughts-

                            - Consider getting a Sig P228 as the back up since the magazines can be interchanged with the P226. But the weight issue goes up now for carrying.

                            - I use the G19 for the field/travel pistol. Its such a generic firearm, there are plenty of accessories for it, including changing out that mag release you do not care for.

                            Good luck.
