This sums it up in a nutshell for me --- it's the same reason I like to shoot .44 magnums out of my 3" Trail Boss. The ridonkulous KA-BLAM alone is worth the recoil.

yeah, but all the pistol AW laws do apply, thus the fixed mag with a capacity no greater than ten rounds outside the pistol grip.

No. These are DROS'd and manufactured (and often marked) as pistols.
They remain pistols as long as no stock is attached. If a stock is attached,
one would become a rifle and subject to NFA rules.

Related legal question: BATF has ruled that ownership of both an AR and short barrel upper is constructive possession of a short barrel rifle. It doesn't matter if the SBU is attached to the lower or not.

What changes when the SBU is attached to a pistol lower? Or if the pistol upper is detached from its lower? It seems too logical to say the BATF recognizes the SBUs are for the pistol lower only.

                        Y'all are spoiled rotten.

I WISH these were available over the counter back when I was into them.

It practically took an act of congress back in 2007-early 2008 to make these happen.

home built receivers.... home built single shot uppers with no gas system.... etc. etc. etc.

                        seriously....

It blows my mind that y'all can just go plunk down a credit card and take one of these home.

Not to mention you can do it for less than 1500 for some really nice hardware.

                        just blows my mind....

Saying "why would anyone need..... (inert type of gun/car/truck/toy here)..." is akin to tucking your scrot between your legs and donning a frilly pink dress

you need to be slapped for even thinking it.... and if you actually SAY it to anyone you get your man card pulled

Because I might someday feel like driving faster than is prudent, because I may want to play with something impractical, and because we don't yet have a comerad deciding for us what "to each according to his needs" is yet.... This is the USA, and if I have the bankroll to buy a tank and drive it down the street, I can buy a tank and drive it down the street... and no one can tell me I dont 'need' it... I wanted it, I bought it... end of story...

                        AR pistols are "ooooooooooooooh" makers

correct. If you don't have a legal use for the combination of parts, then constructive posssession applies.

when the SBU is attached or possessed with a pistol lower, that is a legal use of the parts without becoming an SBR. IIRC, the Rule of Lenity applies at this point.

+1. I've had gun dealers say "why do you need that?" when trying to buy something from them. Hello, what, you don't want me to spend my $$$ here? If I NEEDED another firearm, I'd probably never spend another dollar buying guns from you. Is that what you want? Or do you want to take the time to wait on me and order the item I need from your distributor and make a profit on it. Or would you prefer I take all my business online and use a transfer dealer, when needed?
