I have an XD 40 and an XDS 45.
I also own a Glock G17c that I spent all kinds of money and time on to get it to shoot right.
In no way is an XD a "newb" gun. Only someone with a chip on their shoulder would say that.
My 40 shoots world's better than the Glock by no little margin. But since you don't own a glock, go see if it fits. If it does, why not try it out? If you don't like it, you can always sell it to a Calguns glock fanboy.
They'll beat each other to see who can get ripped off first. No joke.
Oh, and in before bigpimpin screams GLOCK at you.

Between those two, I'd go with a Glock.

I hate the backstrap safety on the XD pistols, i'd go with the glock.

I love the grip on the XD. The glock feels like I'm holding a 2x4. However, after that Illinois thing I would not want to give Springfield my money so I would go with the Glock.

That said go to the range and try both out and see which ones feels best to you.

On paper, the XD with extras is a much better deal, since you like both guns anyway!

So I would say, go with the XD, though I am a Glock fanboy, you can't argue with the extras and the fact that you are indifferent to either gun. No brainer!

Crap, I just realised you are looking at the 5" model.
                DON'T GET IT!
Get the service model. 4" barrel. The 5" barrel is way out of balance.

I've owned Glocks, XD's, XDm's and M&P's. IMO, all are good shooters. You said you want a longer barrel (sight radius) to group at longer distances. With that info, I say go for the G17. Chances are you will want to upgrade the trigger to help get those better groups and the Glock trigger is probably the easiest and cheapest to improve.

Some people will complain about the ergonomics, but if you practice enough with any handgun, it will become second nature to you. The plus side to the Glocks are they are simple and durable.

I've got an XD and a Glock. I prefer shooting the Glock more.

I was being a smart aleck.

FWIW, I would probably go XD due to the standard rifling and the ability to shoot Cast Lead without worry.

Now, with that said, I do own an HK USP (recent acquisition), which of course is Polygonal Rifling, but It's not a big deal for me.

I'm going to vote XD, basically on ergonomics, rifling and price (and the extras).

If you are on a budget get the XD essential 5" barrel.

The problem of owning Glocks is that you will never be satisfy with them in OEM configuration and there are so many aftermarket parts for Glocks that in the end you will spend more.

I disagree. OEM configuration is just fine. The most I do is change out the sights, or add a light and even then not always. Now, I have a bigger problem with leaving 1911's alone.

I had a Springfield in 40 for a short time. After two factory repairs, I sold it. I have six Glocks with over 18,000 rounds & no repairs & not a single malfunction. So, I might be rather biased. I'm sure the Springfield is a good gun, but I'd pick the Glock
