OP, if it were me, with the new magazine restrictions i would recommend shooting single stack and just buying a wilson, nighthawk, etc. The massive capacity of free state 2011's doesnt matter to us anymore, whereas you can always enjoy an excellent 1911 even when you arent shooting competition

price of mags is another tricked glock or even go to tricked SP01 if you want a comp hammer gun or even the CZ tactical sport for 1/3 the STI

Sounds like you can afford it, will you get 3k use from it though?

Imagine that you are in your death bed. What then would you ask yourself? Is it, "Should I have bought that STI and enjoyed it while I could?" Or is it, "Should I have saved that money so that my wife and kids have extra funds in the bank, especially now that I will be gone soon?"

I mean, you get to go on this vacation anyway right? All the more reason to pull the trigger.

You can offset a $3000 gun with a $1500 handbag.

Do it. I did. I can still pay the house note and haven't missed a meal. I wish mine was only $3000 though.

Tell her you want to take up airgun field target. You want to be competitive, so you want to buy a ZM LG100 with a 10-60X scope. That set up will set you back about $5,000 - $5500.

Then disappear for a weekend to go "shoot a match." Come back and tell her you tried airgun field target and didn't really like it. You'd rather stick with 3 gun, but you NEED a new pistol that doesn't "hold you back." As a bonus, you'll save between 2 and 2 1/2 grand. Done.

                            We all have that "sickness"

In your case, I would suggest not to get the gun. Based on your ledger, you will be spending $6k/30k = 20% of your liquid cash on something you don't need. My personal limit is 5%.

Is the STI an awesome gun? Of course. I can buy one anytime at regular price but I still don't own one yet because I know it probably won't make me a better shooter.

Don't buy the gun but instead, take the family on a vacation. That's $ much better spent.

                            Gluck with your decision.

You sound pretty fiscally responsible. As long as you have no credit card debt, personal or car loans, I would agree with what tanks said, you are not spending $6,000.00, you are loaning yourself $6k. As long as you have the discipline to pay yourself back, I say go for it.

Not sure how old your kids are but I would at least make sure you have some money saved for them for college/trade school. Yes, kids need to pay for their own education but my daughter is graduating from Davis and UCs are not cheap. We paid for half, she paid for half via student loans. My wife is a teacher so it's hard to educate her that not everyone needs to or is meant to graduate from a four year university. Daughter is graduating $60k in debt. Her brother is smarter, he is going to two years/AA at Community college, then going to transfer to a University to get his JD and or degree in Criminal Justice, he wants to be in the FBI, Homeland Security/Justice Department. I told him if he ends up with the ATF, I am disowning him ;-) He will have a lot less debt than her. I am very anti-debt, I just paid off $19k in consumer debt today, ashamed that I let myself get that far in. Paying off a small credit card and we will be consumer debt free, no personal loans, no car payments, no credit card debt. I have been there before and was there for a decade but then like you, work debts started piling up, had to buy new computers to finish a project, etc. It all adds up.

                              Enjoy your new pistol!

i justify it by thinking to myself, do i like it, do i have it, do i want it, if the answer is yes, yes and yes. Then i buy it.

if your wondering if you can afford it? then the answer is probably no.

Don't ask yourself if your need it? That answer will always be no
