I once pondered over the debate of 9mm vs. .40, then I was introduced to .38 super and 10mm and forgot all about it.

Kinda like how Dirty Harry's revolver was a .41 magnum in many scenes. Holleywood, huh

                Big 10mm fan obviously.......

Hey......is anybody shooting with the Lone Wolf 9" in their G20?? I am tempted.....

I run a LWD 6" in my G20, used for bedtime gun, stoked with Hornady XTP's. I did all the LWD trigger stuff, great trigger. I buy all the Miwall and LAX crap at the shows for plinking, and stock up on DT when I get a bunch of OT. Favorite handgun ever.

Cupla stories......I was at RR&GC a year ago and there was 3 G20's and one G29 on the line......hilarious.....so we do exist in the real world occasionally......

Back in the day when we used to travel to NV to unload.....I would have a G20 and hunker down with the grip on a solid object.....and I would take pot shots out to 500yrds.....I would see the sand/dust flare up and adjust accordingly......every now and then I would get a hit on long-distance steel.......and I still hit the metal on the 400 at Cow occasionally......6'-14' elevation adjustment haha......

Thinking of adding those bad-*** Mako Group sights......those look awesome......

I'm very tempted in getting a 9" LW barrel. I want it to be able to shoot hard cast for long durations. It should have more chamber support and the higher velocity is a plus.

Thank you, the more feedback we all get as to the feasibility of shooting a G20 unmodded with .40 the better. I am beginning to suspect there is not likely to be an issue with commercial rounds in .40, as-is.

This guy actually went hunting for bears with only his Glock 20:

This backpacker killed a Grizzly with 9 rounds of .45acp, lol, maybe 10mm would've done it in 6?

Here's a dude who dropped a black bear with 3 rounds of 10mm (2 good shots & one bad shot):
*Look for a version of this story to be published in an upcoming issue of Bear Hunting Magazine! There is a saying that “every dog will have his day” and this most certainly applies to …

Would a 10mm be my first choice for a grizzly hunt? No. I probably wouldn't go grizzly hunting with anything less than a semi-auto 30cal rifle or a semi-auto 12ga with slugs. But it seems to work for some people, albeit usually requiring several shots.

Remember, an ethical hunter does not want to wound an animal, he wants to kill it as quickly and humanely as possible. Using a 10mm (or less) and firing 3, 4, 9 shots before the bear dies, seems a little irresponsible to me. That said, a self-defense situation is completely different. I don't care how much the bear is suffering if it's trying to kill me. And it's not realistic to take a .30-06 with me every time I go for a leisurely walk in the woods. Even a wheelgun is a stretch. A G29 fits the bill perfectly. I'll take 11 rounds of 10mm in a 2lb gun over 5rds of 44mag in a 3lb gun any day.
I agree and that's what I was getting at. I've seen a lot of unsupported claims regarding the 10mm and big bear hunting/defense, such as what glock33slinger made. I have no doubts the 10mm is an impressive and respectable round that is more than capable of taking a lot of game in NA including small, maybe even medium-sized black and grizzly bear in either scenario. In the article about the grizzly killed in Denali NP by the backpacker with the 9 rounds of .45, it would have been useful if they had included the size, weight, estimated age and gender of the grizzly. The .45 ACP round is very underpowered for grizzly defense, which leads me to believe it was a young or malnourished bear and was likely smaller in size. Even then, the bear stopped the attack and walked away into the bushes and was found dead the next day, about 100 yards from the sight of the shooting. Had the bear continued the attack we would have probably been reading a different story. As for the 10mm maybe doing it in 6 rounds? It depends on what "it" is? Causing the bear to stop the attack and run off? Sure. Stopping the bear in its tracks and preventing a second attack? I can't be so sure. You can unload all 15 rounds of 10mm into an attacking bear, but it might not be enough to stop the bear from taking you out with him.

For the big Alaska browns (I'm talking 800-1400 lbs) I'm not buying the whole 10mm as an effective means for bear defense or hunting and I agree with you that it's irresponsible to use something underpowered and will likely lead to the animal's suffering when taking any game. People report feeling underpowered with the .44 magnum now for Alaska brown bear defense and 10mm is not even comparable to full power .44 magnum. Sure, magazine capacity helps, but if you're using an underpowered round for the task it seems, to me, to defeat the purpose. Again, unless the claims can be substantiated, I can't advocate for 10mm as a primary means for big bear hunting or for defense while traveling through big bear country. If it's all you have, then sell it and buy a 12 gauge shotgun.

I don't recall which nation it was but I believe it may have been DK that issued G20 pistols for defense against bears. Does anyone know?

Yes, Denmark (Greenland patrols), for at least one. Their so-called long range patrols. Switched for Polar Bear protection, I guess when they run out of .30-06...

There is a pretty credible guy over on GT Forums 10mm threads who lives up in Alaska and has recounted a few bears he killed with his Glock 20. I can't remember his handle (been a while since I was there), but he used to have a red snowmobile as his avatar.

I'm not saying That 10mm is the ideal weapons. To fend off a bear attack but I'd rather fire 15 220 grain hard cast rounds and get 10 on target than fire 6 300 grain and get 3 on target .
And yes that's probably a high hit %.And Velocity and muzzle energy have alot to do with it .

I'd rather have a rifle but I think there are worse calibres than 10mm. I don't envy patrols up in Greenland. I see the value of fresh air and everything but I'd rather stay indoors. Fewer bears.
