10mm Auto

I do not own anything hotter than 10mm in a handgun. I do not like large bore magnum wheel gun recoil, my 686 is ok, but I don't usually like shooting other folks .44mags unless their gun has at least a 6+ inch barrel. I'm told/have read that a .41mag (smith model 57) is the cats meow, but have never handled or shot one.

I don't doubt for a second that those rounds can penetrate a 1200lb grizzly with no problem - but in my opinion they lack the energy transfer needed to actually take the animal down, unless you manage to hit a vital.

Energy transer? In a handgun? Of the people I know that hunt with hand guns 'energy transfer' is not a big part of their equation. Finding a bullet that fully penetrates is and is followed by finding a bullet that has a wide frontal area or will expand (without expanding too much). Handguns don't have the velocity necessary to effect any sort of permanent tissue or nerve damage beyond what is crushed by the frontal area of the bullet. In short, you have to hit the vitals, failure to do so will be a failure to kill an animal in a timely manner.

I thought that was the main problem in a grizzly attack was penetration to reach any vital area on a bear. That anything but a vital hit lung, heart, brain wont stop a grizzly fast enough on a full charge. So penetration was key.

Anything but a shot to the brain or upper spinal column will allow the bear to live long enough to kill you. Shooting a bear in the lungs will kill it, maybe now, maybe in 30 seconds. Same thing with the heart.

Penetration is important for sure, but a big wound channel and massive energy transfer is important too, since you can't always count on hitting a vital.

If you don't hit the vitals you're not going to kill a bear in a timely manner. The idea that 'hydrostatic shock' or some other energy transfer mechanism will result in a fatal wound even if you miss the vitals (especially at handgun speeds) is incorrect. About the only way that can happen is if there is enough of a shockwave close enough to the liver to cause it to tear (the liver being one of the least elastic organs in the body).

If you plan is to defend your life against a bear attack, immediate incapacitation by hitting the CNS is the only way to almost guarantee that the bear won't maul you before dying. If you can break both shoulders things might change, but being able to break both shoulders, with a handgun, when a bear is facing you and about to charge is a difficult proposition.

The 10mm may not be a 44 Magnum, but it's still the most powerful factory round chambered in a regular size handgun. For the fortunate ones having grandfathered standard capacity mags, 15 rounds in a Glock 20 is just awesome. 1911 shooters don't feel outgunned at all with 9+1 of 10mm. Uncle Ted in Texas has 16 or 19 rounds on tap with his Perfect 10.
